The first one I received failed in two uses. The somewhat sophisticated control panel is located on the side and it is NOT sealed. If you spill any fluid onto the side and it goes into the circuitry, it can short out. Another problem is the plug recepticle is on the opposite side of the handle...may sound good, but that makes it too big for my Acura TL's coffee cup holder. Lastly, the cup lid is flimsy and doesn't secure well. This cup was a great concept that was poorly executed.

The smart mug series of mugs are the best travel mugs I have ever used. I am in my car an average of 43,000 miles a year. It is excellent to be able to set the mug's temperature to my favorite drinking level. Cleaning the mug is easy since the liner is removeable. The liner is definitely NOT dishwasher safe. Unfortunately, the rubber temp control button has a tendency to pop out of the control panel over time, rendering the temperature control useless. Try to be careful not to pull or rub anything against the control button. This is the third mug I have purchased in four years, but I still feel it is worth it.

The first time I used this mug, it broke. I filled it with coffee, plugged in and smoke came out of the display area and the digital display was fried. This was a lot of money to pay for something that breaks the first time you use it!

Where should I start? 1, Not fast to heat. 2, Too tall/narrow/tippy in any mug-holder that I know of. 3, Placement of power cord input on mug is Not handy. 4, Lid closed still leaves a 1/8" hole for liquid to leak/splash out of when you hit a bump or jostle the mug. 5, Exterior finish on "Stainless Steel" Smart-Mug has a clear urethane, or some other coating that is very easily marred and chips off. 6, Stand this mug on a table top? DONT BUMP THE TABLE It barely stands on its own. 'Nuff said. Find a different heated mug.

The features of this product seemed promising to me. Reality didn't fufill expectation, however. The handle broke off when I adjusted its position in my car's cup holder. After two weeks the electronic system built into the mug failed. Not only does the temperature indicators stay blank, but the heater no longer warms the coffee at all. I believe this item is made by a Chinese firm. China has given the world silk, gunpowder, and printing. A shame it has been premature in giving us a reliable travel mug.

Since the tragic discontinuation of Aladdin's MicroMagic product line, I've been waiting for mugs like these to come to market. I bought one of these Smart Mugs and a (cheaper) USB [ 12V, Travel Mug, Stainless Steel ] mug, intending them for home use via an AC adapter [ Wagan 5 Amp AC to 12V DC Power Adapter ] of some kind. While the geek-chic USB novelty mug remains on the shelf (its single temp preset isn't hot enough for me), I bought two more of these same Smart Mugs, despite the obvious design flaws (which other reviewers have covered pretty comprehensively), plus the fact that the mug I received isn't quite the same as pictured, and the temperature displayed is (logarithmically) inaccurate...to heck with the shortcomings, I *need* this!
So I bought two more, and now I have proof personal that all of the positive and negative reviews of this product can be true at the same time; so I titled this review as I did. Fortunately for this Amazon Prime customer, Amazon facilitated the return of the one mug that had a functional temp display with a busted heater at their own cost. The two surviving Smart Mugs continue to function within their established screwball limits (#1 @ 133 = #2 @ 130 = 140 deg. F), and though I treat them gently--washing and filling the interior without wetting the exterior; not applying too much force to the button or the plug; never letting them run with less than an inch of contents--I am using them constantly, even to the point of falling asleep with a half-empty mug left running unattended without adverse consequence.
The Bottom Line: if you CAN delay the gratification, wait for the next generation of "smart" mugs; these mugs aren't actually made well.

It is so awesome to drink a nice hot cup of coffee or tea or cider in my car, and not only that but I can set the mug to the temperature that I prefer. I would recommend this to anyone.

This heated mug works as well as is stated by the product description. You can put cold water in, and it will heat it to as much as 160 degrees Fahrenheit in a reasonably short amount of time. Being able to set the temperature makes this product suitable for a diverse array of temperature preferences. The only slightly negative features of this mug are that you have to set the temperature each time you plug it in (unless you prefer the default 120 degrees Fahrenheit), and the mug does not come with an adapter for AC power. However, this product works wonderfully; I could not be much happier with the purchase of this item.
