5.0 out of 5 stars New to Fantasy? Start here:, March 2, 2010
This review is from: Princess of Light: Heirs of a Broken Land - Book One (Paperback)
Princess of Light is a great coming-of-age fantasy adventure with aspects that will appeal to everyone from teens to middle-aged readers. Although set in a fantasy world, complete with magic, swordfights, and mystical creatures, the author weaves in familiar elements from our own world making the book easily accessible to someone who hasn't read fantasy before. The Author uses simple prose to present complex plotlines involving religion, politics, and mystery in a way that makes the book a joy to read.

The plot follows three female characters who are independent and self-sufficient, but who find ways of working together to further their causes. This is a refreshing change from the usual male-based fantasy more commonly found on bookstore shelves. Considering the large number of female fantasy readers out there, it's about time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has "Lord of The Ring" Flavour, December 7, 2009
This review is from: Princess of Light: Heirs of a Broken Land - Book One (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book very much. I found it a bit slow going in the begining but once the stage was set I found it hard to put down. As I was reading I was thinking that I had a very similar feeling when reading Lord of The Ring. Even though it is fantasy, you can't help but feel it could very well be real because of the way it is writtem. As with all good reads I did not want it to end. I am looking forward with Great Expectations to book two and three.
Good Read.
Keep up the good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping fantasy tale, May 20, 2009
This review is from: Princess of Light: Heirs of a Broken Land - Book One (Paperback)
Princess of Light follows the separate yet intertwining paths of three young women caught up in a story with all the trappings of a gripping fantasy tale, from magic to monsters to mythology. Yet the true wonder of the book is the very humanity of its central characters, Cassara, Shirina, and Avarielle. Each character is lovingly crafted and imbued with life by the author, and the reader is compelled to turn the pages faster to follow the three women (and the other characters that surround them) down a path fraught with danger, drama, laughter and tears.

Bilodeau weaves a tight and colourful story bright with imagination and suspense. A promising debut novel from a budding star on the storytelling scene (both oral and written). By the end of the first novel, the reader is left counting down the days until the next installment in the story arrives!

This book was not merely story but a journey. The characters quickly pull you into their lives, their surprises, and their struggles. You can't help but go along for the ride. I laughed, I cried, and I can hardly wait to continue the adventure in book 2!

3.0 out of 5 stars PRINCESS OF LIGHT BY MARIE BILODEAU, November 17, 2009
This review is from: Princess of Light: Heirs of a Broken Land - Book One (Paperback)
We all react to different situations in different ways. The question is when we are tested to the extremes of our endurance, whether we will succeed or fail. In the genre of fantasy, readers find an escape in characters that defy the odds and triumph, often with magical powers. Marie Bilodeau has done just this with Princess of Light, the first book in the Heirs of a Broken Land series.

Princess Cassara Edoline always thought herself an ordinary princess, living in an ordinary kingdom, in an ordinary world. And that all changed when the Wall of Loss started to fail and the dark creatures entered her world. She fled with little more than a magical amulet, leaving a destroyed kingdom, a murdered family, and a brother now in the clutches of the invading hordes. But Edoline is learning things about herself, learning that she has powers within her she never knew about, powers that, with the magical amulet, can stop the evil flooding into her world. She will also use those powers to rescue her helpless brother. But first she needs to find out what is wrong with the Wall of Loss and see if she can fix it.

Princess of Light employs many of the tropes of your ordinary fantasy, and yet there's a reason many fantasy fans eat up and read anything with a fantastical element; it's the fantastical characters that face unbeatable odds and somehow are able to fight back. Edoline is one of those powerful female characters that readers will feel the thrill to read about in this first book of an interesting new series.
