5.0 out of 5 stars Your PMS needs this book...and so do you!
This book is incredible. It breaks PMS down into simple steps of understanding and recognizing the symptoms. Then, it goes further to help women manage their PMS. It provides a humorous approach that does not talk over your head or make fun of the PMS. Just a real approach to what you can do to stop suffering and take control. It really is an owners manual...

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, amusing but heavy on cliches
Princess and the PMS tries to keep light the serious subject of PMS. Perhaps it tries too hard to be funny. But the book has some good tips and I've tried many of them, like diet changes, and it does work. It is an easy and quick read and is a good book I would recommend for women who haven't done much research on their own. The Prince side (the flip side) is amusing,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Your PMS needs this book...and so do you!, August 22, 2007
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
It really is an owners manual!

As a bonus, the Princess and the PMS comes with a guide for men that will make every woman breath a sigh of relief. Finally, men can understand and act upon suggestions to make PMS an easier time of the month. The Prince and the PMS: A Survivals Manual is an added gift to every woman.

The suffering ended the moment I started reading this book. I was shaking my head in agreement (because I could see myself in those pages) and making a plan to change the effects of PMS on my life. I have already suggested it to several of my friends (and their husbands). One friend even gave it to her daughter for her 16th birthday!

4.0 out of 5 stars Advice for weathering PMS for both men and women, November 23, 2007
By
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
The Princess and the PMS (and its two-for-one companion, The Prince and the PMS) is a self-help survival manual for all things menstruation related. Written by a husband-and-wife pair of life coaches (Elizabeth Goodman and Herb Tanzer), as well as several other co-authors, this book provides humorous yet practical advice for weathering the physical and emotional pitfalls of premenstrual syndrome. The "girls only" side takes on a conversational, just-between-us-gals tone, while the "guys only" version of the guide is less wordy and more to-the-point. Both use humorous topic headings and cartoons to drive home the scientific points. Neither guide is earth-shattering (you could find this info with some basic Internet research skills), but both are entertaining and scientifically sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars PMS Help for both Women and Men, September 12, 2007
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
The authors did a great job putting PMS in real life scenarios. It was easy to understand, informative and enjoyable to read. What is great about this book is one side is written for women and the flip side is written for men, but I read both sides and so did my husband. We can now relate to one another on what I go through with PMS and what HE goes through when it is that time of the month. It has definitely opened up the lines of communication between us during that time of the month.

Another bonus to the book is it has charts to record women's cycles and advice on what to eat and not to eat, supplements and exercises to help relieve some symptoms of PMS, and not let PMS take over your life. The authors did an awesome job in keeping the men's attention about PMS with some humors anecdotes and real solutions to help the relationship. Overall, both my husband and I are so happy we found this book. I have even told other couples about what this book has to offer and they are eager to read it to help improve their lines of communications during the PMS time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice self-help manual for both women AND men, October 10, 2007
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
The Princess and the PMS is actually two books in one: the main part of the book is 168 pages long and geared to women, but if you flip the book over, there is a second, shorter volume (61 pp), "The Prince and the PMS," which is geared to men.

Let's start with "The Princess and the PMS" first. Subtitled "The PMS Owner's Manual," this self-help handbook is designed to help women recognize and cope with the symptoms of PMS. The authors take a casual, humorous approach, but they are also quite sympathetic to the suffering that can accompany PMS with some women. The chapter titles are goofy and the illustrations even goofier, but the information is sound. In order to help the reader better understand her own symptoms, the authors provide a "Monthly 'Monstrual' Chart" as a means of tracking these. They then review various options for treatment, from diet (including supplements) to yoga to medication management. The final few chapters focus on coping with relationships during PMS, both love relationships and job relationships; self-care strategies for learning to "chill" follow.

"The Prince and the PMS" is a "survival manual" geared towards men. It provides educational information for helping men understand the changes that their female partners may go through during PMS and offers "10 Rules to Live By" when dealing with their mates. There's also a helpful question & answer section, a translation guide, suggestions on what NOT to say, and ideas for staying sane.

Overall, this is a nice handbook for both men and women. I did find the information to be a bit basic (ie, you could easily find similar information by doing an internet search), but for someone who is experiencing PMS, it might be nice to have this manual for easy reference. However, another problem I had with the book is the implication that every woman becomes a crazy woman during PMS, which I think perpetuates an unfortunate stereotype. Yes, for some women, PMS symptoms can be quite serious and deserving of attention, but for others (myself included), that time of month can go by virtually unnoticed. So, while I would recommend this book, I would note that it's most appropriate for women who do suffer from PMS symptoms and yet who are able to view their situation with some humor.

5.0 out of 5 stars I DID laugh out loud....., March 5, 2009

just reading the two page 'note to the guys' - it had me howling. The book continues in that fun way (at least 'the guy side' and I concur with others who realize it's not just funny - in fact it's NOT funny at all, if you don't know what the bleep is going on - but this book is there to give all the frame of reference and tools - as well as some, perhaps desperately needed! laughs. In the interest of full disclosure I live on the same street a block away and love and respect Herb and Elizabeth both very much - but I would never let any such relationship cause me to write something like this - I WAS compelled by my laughter, and certainly INSPIRED by it to write this. Great book to have or give!

4.0 out of 5 stars A humorous read, June 9, 2008
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
The Princess and the PMS provides a funny, light read on a day you don't want to do much other than lay on the couch with your feet elevated. Although most of the information was not new to me, it is presented in a light hearted way that may take our minds off of our cramps and ease our latest moodswing a bit. I also enjoyed the flipside of the book (which I thought was a great idea), The Prince and the PMS. It is presented so that even a guy can understand it. Maybe they'll get it now! If you're looking to add a little humor to your cycle, or at least want reassurance that you in fact are not alone, this book will do it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Toilet Read, May 28, 2008
By
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
The book was an easy read and enjoyable but not really something I jumped into or couldn't put down. It's a good book to keep by the toilet when you have a few extra minutes. I agree that it relied heavily on cliches about PMS, but there was some good advice as far as diet and daily routines. I think men would also enjoy the second half of the book, as I'm sure they can relate to those stereotypes of women and PMS. A cute book to give to a girl friend when it's that time of the month.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a lot of new information..., May 28, 2008

This book is at times amusing, but I find it relies too heavily on cliched man/woman stereotypes and witticisms. If you are fairly well versed in proper body care and nutrition, there isn't a lot that this book can teach you. I did like the idea of charting PMS symptoms, and the chart included in the book for this purpose. Cute book.

3.0 out of 5 stars PMS for Couples, January 26, 2008
By
This review is from: The Princess and the PMS:The PMS Owner's Manual / The Prince and the PMS: The PMS Survival Manual (Paperback)
The Princess and the PMS: The PMS Owner's Manual/ The Prince and the PMS: The Survival Manual is a combination book about PMS for both men and women. The Owner's (women's) side takes you through recognizing symptoms that are related to PMS vs those that are just stress related to treating your worst symptoms. The book offers a chart of vitamins and supplements and which symptoms they help to relieve which I found to be a nice "at your fingertips" type of guide. While the cartoons and conversational tone lent to an easy read, I didn't feel that there was much groundbreaking information that a mature woman wouldn't already know about her PMS.
