Book Description

The Dragon Arch July 15, 2008
A novel inspired by an ancient Chinese tale, Princess Pearl tells the story of a half-human, half-fish fairy princess of the watery kingdom of Emerald Mirrors, a lake in Southern China. Pearl lives in a world where tradition holds that girls are supposed to be docile and subdued, but this is not the life Pearl wants. Refusing to be held back by these rules and customs, the princess vows to do the unthinkable: to be the first girl to jump over the mighty Dragon Arch in the roaring Yellow River and become a dragon! Jumping the arch has been the ultimate goal of the toughest male in the Aqua world, but Pearl is determined to win this most fierce and feared competition by vying head to head with all the boys. Right before the fateful jump, another unthinkable happens. Pearl falls in love with a human boy, and then she slowly uncovers the truth about the biggest secrets in her royal family.

Editorial Reviews

Review

As a child, these tales nourished my imagination and ability to love and to hate. They introduced me to fantasy lands full of characters with courage, integrity and goodness. They made me understand that tragedies are not necessarily sad, because tender hearts usually achieve happiness and satisfaction through sorrow. In a word, they have made me what I am today, a writer, whose livelihood depends on compassion and fascination. As modern renditions and artful adaptations of these ancient tales, this series has brought out the most touching elements and core spirit, drama and beauty of the old stories, yet at the same time given them a new life and charm catered to young readers today --- -- --Geling Yan, Award winning writer - Author of The Banquet Bug

As my daughters are getting older, I have been wanting them to know the best stories from the Chinese culture, but have found it hard to locate a version with the right kind of story-telling suitable to their ages and American taste, that could draw and hold their attention, and strike a chord in their hearts. I am happy to have been presented this series. Beautiful stories beautifully retold, in a refreshing way and with age appropriate gradings, this edition is the finest I ve ever seen, definitely something I would like my children to read and grow up on. --Joan Chen, award winning director/actress- Leading role, The Last Emporer<

These are the stories I've been waiting to read since childhood classic tales, vividly retold, and beautifully illustrated in ways that stimulate the imagination. The questions posed are important ones to young minds how things happen and why, as well as the consequences of personal choices. They are what I pondered as a child experiencing my own twists and turns in life. And those were the thoughts that very much influenced my becoming a writer. As these stories show, there are no simple answers, but with imagination you can go to many places and find many possibilities. These are magical stories for everyone. ----Amy Tan, Author of The Joy Luck Club - Creative Consultant to the PBS television series Sagwa<

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Princess Pearl: Book 1 The Dragon Arch (Paperback)
This is an amazing book even for an adult reader like myself.

The story is full of imagination and twists. I especially love how the author manages to go between an underwater fantasy land and the human world so fluidly and seamlessly.

I originally had some doubts thinking I might be too old for it, but once I started I can't put it down! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story, Action & Romance, March 5, 2009

This review is from: Princess Pearl: Book 1 The Dragon Arch (Paperback)
I loved this book!! It's about a mermaid seeking immortality by becoming a dragon -- something that back in the day only mer-men did. Princess Pearl (according to Chinese legend) was the first female to accomplish this task. Anyway, the story is a fun read with action, adventure and romance, because Pearl (naturally) falls for a handsome human. It's a great read for everyone pre-teen to adult and a good fit it you like fantasy and romance with a little action mixed in.
