Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this clever variation on the time-travel theme, Elizabeth is whisked from 17th-century England to the McCormick farm in present-day Iowa. Though Elizabeth is a nobleman's daughter and accustomed to luxurious living, even the most ordinary features of 20th-century life (cars, television, penicillin) strike her as strange and wonderful. A trip to the doctor seems full of menace, yet brings about miraculous healing. The McCormicks are, in Elizabeth's mind, mere peasants--yet by simply switching an electric light off and on, Mrs. McCormick controls a power that even Queen Elizabeth I has not dreamed of. Comparisons of this sort make up the bulk of the novel. Readers eager for swashbuckling adventure will have to look elsewhere. For those able to appreciate it, this thoughtful novel offers a wry look at the practical side of time travel. Ages 8-12.

This review is from: The Princess in the Pigpen (Hardcover)
this book details the story of a young princess from the 1600's who is transported into the future to the year 1988. the charming fairy tale of sorts follows her story as she befriends the family whose pigpen she has appeared in, manages to find her way back home, and saves her dying mother in the process. well written to be pleasurable reading, its the perfect choice for that special little girl in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful gem of a childrens' book!, March 30, 2009
This book details the story of a young, privileged girl from 1600 who magically travels through time to an American farm in the 20th century. The girl ends up making friends with people of a class she ordinarily would not have associated with, in a quest to save her ailing mother back in Elizabethan England. Can she ever get back to her own time?
The Princess in the Pigpen was one of my favorite books growing up... let me tell you, it served as an excellent history lesson as well. Much of my frame of reference regarding Elizabethan England, 15 years later, comes from having read it. By the end of this tale, your kids will know that Liz II was bald and leeches were commonly used medicinally, among many other things. I read this over and over and over again!
Very educational and still a wonderfully entertaining story, you won't be disappointed. 5 stars!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Princess in the Pigpen (Hardcover)
Princess in the Pigpen is the best, I want to give it 5 stars. Elizabeth was really sick and Sukie first gave her a bath and dried her off and then put her in bed.
When she lay down in the bed, this light struck her in the face when Sukie opened the curtains. When she rolled over away from the light, she was in a different place. This man was standing by her.
He asked her "What are you doing here, miss?" in amazement. She started calling for her dog and Sukie but they didn't come. She tried so many times but they still didn't come. Than this woman came in and put her hand on her forehead. The lady said that she (Elizabeth) was ill so they took her to the doctor and she took a look at her. She took off Elizabeth's dress and gave her some medicine to make her feel better.
After they took her to the doctors, they took her to get their daughter. They hate each other at first, but after a little bit later, they become friends. They have a lot of fun together.
The girl goes into the barn to get Elizabeth back home to get some medicine for her mother. They do a lot to get back home. I know I left out a lot but I'm running out of time. Trust me, you'll love this book!!!!!!
