Taniguchi: Queen of the "inbetween",
By ChibiNeko "Sooo many books, so little time!" (Whereever I go, here I am.) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Princess Prince (Paperback)
Before you think about buying this or tracking down a copy, let me give you a little info about Taniguchi's work. This author loves to leave stories open ended & somewhat unfinished. I like to classify her work as the "inbetween" stage- these are the actions that happen inbetween the bigger events. You can guess at what will eventually happen, but in the meantime this is how everyone acts. While some of her stories have a bit more action, the work will always feel unfinished.Princess Prince is one of her fantasy series, focusing around two princes. Both are highly attractive but only Prince Lawrence has been forced to dress as a woman for somewhat uncertain reasons. (The king does so out of grief & I believe that it is mentioned that it will help keep the kingdom safe at some point in time.) It doesn't help that "Lori" (his princess name) is head over heels in love with a beautiful young woman who seems to be slowly becoming as equally smitten with him. There's magic crystals, thieves, & dark forces attempting to steal the crystals, but overall the manga's storyline is that of peaceful days in the kingdom. Once you get past the unfinished feeling of the book (always a jarring experience) the series is a joy to read. I always end up coming back to this book & to other works by Taniguchi because the artwork is just that wonderful & she has a definite knack for storytelling. I loved that even though Taniguchi didn't end the series on a definite note, you can predict your own endings & make up your own stories. If any one manga artist is capable of sparking creativity, it is Taniguchi. This manga is very much worth tracking down even for one read. Not everyone will like this series or her works in general so if possible, try to find it in the library if you can.

If I could give this more than five stars, I would!,

I ADORE this manga! I haven't been able to put it down for more than a few minutes since I got it! The characters are lovable, the art is beautiful, and the story is original. I loved Emma the Angel Bird and Janice, and the pair of princes captured my heart and my interest right when I opened the book! The other stories in this collection are just as well done, and just as interesting. This one definitely qualifies as one of the favorites in my collection! (it's not easy to pick favorites when you have over a hundred manga!)

"Princess Prince" is worth every penny that it costs! This book is THICK. The artwork is GORGEOUS and EXTREMELY ADORABLE at times. The plotline really sucks you in. The characters are relatable and you root for each one. It's romance in one volume at its best! The ending is also very satisfactory, since it's not your typical shojo story and leaves you using your imagination. There are also bonus stories that add to the book's overall charm. 10 out of 5 stars!

What is Wrong With Your King?,
By American Idiot "K.T." (Green Day , America) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Princess Prince (Paperback)
This is an awesome book by Tomoko Taniguchi. The story is funny and romantic. The drawings show the love and care that was put into this comic.Only one thing is unusual about it. What is wrong with their king? I know that that Prince Lawrence looks like a girl but to have him act like one is kind of sad on his part. He is in love with the beautiful girl Jenny, only to have to hide his feelings because his father dresses him like a girl. Still this is part of the humor that Tomoko put in to bring this story to life. It also includes a romance story for Prince Matthew, Brandon, and Emma the Angel girl. If you are a fan of humor and romance this is just the story for you. The only thing that may make you feel strange about this book is how the boys like boys and girls liking girls until you figure the story out. But still enjoy:)

Sweetness and light for Princess Prince,
By Anna T. (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Princess Prince (Paperback)
If you yearn for the old-school shoujo series (like Candy Candy), then I think you'll enjoy Princess Prince. This is a sweet and lovely anthology of stories, a couple of which revolve around the title characters Princes Matthew and Lawrence of the Gemstone Kingdom. Matthew and Lawrence are gorgeous twin boys, but their father, in his grief over losing his wife when the boys were born, decided that one who resembled his wife the most, should be a girl. Lawrence (aka Lori) happened to get the short end of the stick and then had to wear dresses and be brought up as a girl. As if your typical shoujo manga stereotypes aren't enough, Lori falls in love with a girl but cannot reveal his true gender because of a curse that might befall the kingdom if he tells the truth. Taniguchi is a good manga-ka. Her drawings are in light, delicate lines, which almost matches the plotline, which resembles a dreamy old-fashioned fairy tale. The characters are all very sweet and cute -- we even get the ubiquitous mascot in the form of Emma, the angel bird. A couple of good things to note about this volume: it's thick! It's probably a good 300+ pages in length, which is incredible for an English translated manga. The character introductions at the beginning of the volume are a nice touch (and the 90210 reference is very funny).

Cute shoujo fairytale.,

This review is from: Princess Prince (Paperback)
From Tomoko Taniguchi, the creator of Popcorn Romance and Call Me Princess, comes this funny spin on an old tale. In order to fulfill an ancient prophecy, pretty boy Prince Lawrence's father had him raised as a princess and renamed him Lori. However, a young angel bird threatens to expose his secret. That and the handsome young suitor Brandon has intentions on kidnapping him, although he believes that Lawrence's sister is really the princes posing as a princess. This while Lawrence under the guise of Lori escapes with the Princess Jenny who are being chased by other pursuers. Princess Prince is a great shoujo manga. This graphic novel collects the entire series originally printed by CPM Manga in comic book format.

I have read Aquarium and Call Me Princess, but this book, Princess Prince was absolutely good. I like the way characters are drawn. It was much better than in Aquarium. If you are shoujo's fans, better check it out.
