This is, hands down, one of my top 5 game favorites of all time. I spent hours playing this when I was 11, and I still take it out and play parts of it a couple times a year. It's one of the more rare and expensive NES titles, so I will summarize for those unable to find it. It's an early Japanese RPG, and you play through the game as Sir Cucumber, out to rescue the captured Princess Tomato with the aid of your quippy sidekick, Percy the persimmon. You navigate through 8 levels, interacting with people, gathering supplies, and fighting enemies (with finger wars!). The story is cute and original--various vegetables forming a Resistance to overthrow the occupying Farmies--the music is memorable, and the graphics are a little better than the average NES title. Navigation is primitive, since you use the d-pad and A button to click on various commands flanking both sides of the screen (look, give, talk, check, take, fight, etc). It was a game a bit ahead of its time...seems ripe for a Nintendo DS revamp! Highly recommended, pick it up if you see it!

Well, I thought it was fun. By NES standards, yes, it is fun. If you're one of those people who automatically disregard anything below the current high-tech games that ALWAYS have great graphics, lots of flashy sound effects, and long, complicated storylines, then you probably won't like it. Personally, I thought it was cute, and I still play it from time to time. You are a cucumber who has to go save a tomato, and your sidekick is a persimmon named Percy who gives you clues on what to do next. It's not a game where you move the character around (such as Mario Bros.). Instead, you click on sidebar buttons such as "Talk," "Take," "Buy," or "Hit" to carry out commands. There are a few tricky spots, but any walkthrough can get you through. Battles are won by fingerwars, i.e. paper-scissor-rock, which is funny because the bad guys you fight don't actually die. They just run away because they're so worn out from playing paper-scissors-rock. There are a lot of small cultural reference jokes in the game, such as in the end credits one of the game producers is named "Onegi" (onion). Overall, I recommend it for its uniqueness. Incidentally, the music that plays when you put in the password for saved games-- My friend liked it so much that she made me transcribe it for piano/violin so I could play it as she walked down the aisle at her wedding. I'd bet she's the only one in the world who played Princess Tomato music at her wedding.

In game description: "Many growing seasons ago, there was a place where vegetables lived happily, and in perfect harmony. One day, Minister Pumpkin betrayed King Broccoli. He kidnapped Princess Tomato and stole the Turnip Emblem. He took them to his castle in the Zucchini Mountains. He sent his cruel Farmies out to terrorize all the vegetables in the Salad Kingdom. Shortly thereafter, the poor King died from the loss of his beautiful daughter. But he promised you, brave Sir Cucumber, the Princess' hand and the kingdom if you bring them back safely. God speed Sir Cucumber! Hurry! Saladoria is down this path. The Zucchini Mountains are over yonder." Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is a great game, for all ages. It's your standard point and click text adventure. Other similar games include Uninvited, Shadowgate, and Dejavu. Little kids may not understand the premises of this game completely, but they can still have fun playing. It's very kid friendly and please to look at. It's not that difficult to beat this game, but there are some parts where you may get stuck. Early in the game, you'll encounter a baby persimmon named Percy, which is a type of fruit grown from a tree. He'll be choking and asks for water. You must get him water and when you do, he'll then become your sidekick from then on. You can turn to him for hints if you get stuck, but bascially, he's useless. I myself didn't really think it was necessary to include Percy in the game. This game features a password save system and a "rock, paper, scissors" finger wars type battle. You must try to guess which direction that the loser will look. If the opponent manages to look away from the direction that Percy points, then the round will start over. You must defeat your opponent until all of their icons are gone, and then the next time will be game-set-match. Several characters throughout the game will ask you for favors. If you complete these favors, you'll usually be awarded to There also many mazes you must get through, which can be very frustrating. You can find walkthroughs for these online. The only thing that confused me about this was a human girl named Lisa. Every character in this game is either a fruit or vegetable. Lisa is Princess Tomato's sister. You may have guess that Princess Tomato is a red tomato. Overall, this game is fun, quirky, and mysterious. Definitely buy this.
