5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This is, hands-down, one of the best home-reference books I've seen in ages.
It's the kind of book that kids take down & put on the floor (it's very heavy) and pore over for hours--and learn a tremendous amount from.

I want to start by saying my son loves this book! It is exactly what he wanted and he is slowly devouring it page by page. That being said, we (his mother and I) are not very satisfied with the product. The first copy we received of the book looked like it had been dropped and damaged before it was packaged and shipped. So, we returned it and Amazon sent a second copy...

This is, hands-down, one of the best home-reference books I've seen in ages.
It's the kind of book that kids take down & put on the floor (it's very heavy) and pore over for hours--and learn a tremendous amount from.
I especially like the little visual detail showing how big the animals are compared to a person--some things are best shown in graphic form, and this is one of them.

The photos will enchant you, and the species-articles (written by an impressive cadre of academics) cover every detail you might imagine. In addition there are articles on topics such as "The Bushmeat Trade."

If there's a way to put this on your shelf, do it. Or even better, give it as a gift to a child who has an interest in animals...which is what I will do next Christmas.

This book is amazing. It's very detailed, has excellent pictures, and provides all the information you could want on practically any kind of mammal. It's organized into several groups, so you can find the animal you're looking for easily, along with other animals that are similar to it in family, genus, and behavior. I highly recommend purchasing this book, it has everything you're looking for and more!

This review is from: The Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals (Paperback)
This book brings essencial information about all the mammals around the world, approaching the main aspects of their ecology, behavior and biology, group to group. Easy for reading, with good issues and amazing pictures. Also, maps, cladograms and charts help us to have a deep understanding of what it's talking about.

I want to start by saying my son loves this book! It is exactly what he wanted and he is slowly devouring it page by page. That being said, we (his mother and I) are not very satisfied with the product. The first copy we received of the book looked like it had been dropped and damaged before it was packaged and shipped. So, we returned it and Amazon sent a second copy right away. This book wasn't packed very well but amazingly it arrived without any damage.
However, within an hour's time, the binding was already beginning to pull away from the pages. It is a huge book and heavy, and the soft cover just doesn't work for this book; it should be a hardcover book - this might offer some better protection during shipping and also a stiffer, sturdier binding. We have had the book less than a month and it won't be much longer before it will need to be rebound.
So, the content of the book is amazing, but the binding and soft cover is ineffective and will need to be replaced.

You know how a really smart person is able to explain complex ideas in ways that appeal to both specialists and laypersons and even children?

This is it!

I am a liberal arts person and I enjoy it.

My co-parent is an engineer and enjoys it.

My 7 year old loves reading it.

It is really a wonderful resource that we pick up and look at, just because it's there and it's fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, December 21, 2010

Great Reference for general taxonomy and general information on mammals.
As zoo docents and interpretive guides my spouse and I have found this a wonderful general reference for mammal information. It was a great price from Amazon and we now have our own copy and don't have to go use the copy in the zoo library. As zoo docents we have to develop presentations on a lot of different animals and this is one of the recommended field guides for information. While we use many different sources this reference is great to use to get started on finding information on the animal we are researching. I would recommend it to anyone doing work with a wide range of mammals.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource, November 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals (Paperback)
I love collecting books on animals, and I must say that this is the best animal reference book I have ever bought!
It contains just enough information about each animal to give you a general understanding - without going into too much depth.
Each page contains wonderful photos and also beautiful illustrations, and as I work in the field of design and art it's great to have a single resource that has so much visual imagery.
It also covers more animals than I have ever seen in a resource before.
This chunky book is great for adults and invaluable to children!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most incredible accurate reference book for mammals out there, June 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals (Paperback)
The information is detailed, the pictures are glossy and sharp and incredible to look at. Every animal in this book is labeled by common name as well as scientific name making it easy to refer back to. The animals that are highlighted are not necessarily the most popular which is what I liked the most.
