Solid Purchase, no Remorse!!!!,

This review is from: Apex Headlamp (Misc.)
Despite leaving the Boy Scout program as a Weblo many, many years ago, I have always had somewhat of an obsessive compulsive desire to be "Well Prepared" for whatever activity I might be undertaking at the moment. Raised to love and respect the outdoors in a very traditional, red-blooded American way, I have developed quite an affinity for all the tools used in the pursuit of adventure in the "wild". Coming in as a solid 3 on my Top Ten "Don't leave home without 'em" items are Flashlights/Headlamps. Over the years I have owned and/or used nearly every kind of illumination tool available. I have a nice collection of mid-level quality flashlights that are strategically placed around the house and in all my vehicles and "emergency kits". While I am pleased with the various Pelican and Streamlight flashlight I own, I have not, until recently, acquired any "High Quality" illumination tools. After reading hundreds of reviews and narrowing my list of desirable headlamps down to 2, the Princeton Tec Apex and the Surefire Saint, I drove to a local retailer who stocked both lamps. After handling both units and evaluating light quality in a darkened storeroom, (both were impressive), my decision came down to build quality, company reputation, and finally cost vs. value. I have to say right here that I went in slightly prejudiced towards the Surefire Saint, which is, I am convinced, the most durable of the two. However, despite the obvious benefits of a mil-spec hard anodized aluminium body, (Saint), the obvious quality that is built into the Princeton Tec Apex headlamp, especially for the price point, is unbeatable. Light output is listed as 100 lumens for he Saint and 200 lumens for the Apex. In the dark storeroom, the difference between the two on high spot seemed negligible. The rheostat operation of the Saint was nice, but it was not nicer than the option on the Apex to choose between 2 levels of Spot beam intensity or 2 levels of wide area illumination with strobe effect. Long story short, I don't think you can go wrong with either light, but unless you are heading for combat or enjoy impromptu face-plants into hard surfaces, the price differential between the two really puts the Apex in the spotlight. Princeton Tec and Surefire both enjoy quality reputations and stand behind their products so that's pretty much a tie. As far as pricing is concerned the Apex is the hands down winner. Heck, but 2 Apex headlamps and a gross of batteries and you can still come in below the Saint's asking price. As a side-note, both of these lamps are dual fuel which I think is a wonderful feature that gives you some weight/storage options. I ordered mine through Amazon and it just arrived so I will have a slightly more functional review in the days ahead. Go for it. This lamp will not disappoint you.

The Princeton Tech Apex model with the 4 each AA battery pack was the caving standard for a number of years. Many still use it as do I. It is cherished among cavers; however, my first impression was not good. I bought one unit and cycled through the features several times. The switch burned out so it was returned. This happened a second time. It was replaced again. I was livid but needed to standardize since my ward is being a foreign advisor to a conservancy agency in the North Western Philippines centered around caving. Between us we probably have 25 units in operation. The caveat is do not cycle through the features unless proceed very slowly.
Princeton might want to look into this. 2115|R25SXIHY39OKC3;2115|R2YQY0VNZYCVS;2115|R3H5XHJYK19YVK;
