So when it works it's a fine device but every time I come to it the batteries are dead flat. Poor design that has residual load when off.

I expected more from Princeton Tec. I really liked the light from this headlamp; it was quite bright for the size, and had a very nice field. The Byte is lightweight and reversible too (can wear it upside-down) I like to support companies who still manufacture in the US, however it has several technical issues however (design flaws, rather):

-Draws 50mA when OFF. I bought two of these headlamps, but after constantly changing batteries, I suspected something was amiss, and finally checked if it was drawing current when OFF, and sure enough it was. As an engineer, I find this completely unacceptable and a very embarrassing mistake on their part.

-You have to cycle through the brightness levels when trying to turn it off. My Petzl headlamp only cycles through the brightness levels when you're turning it on. After its on for a few minutes, it will simply turn off when you push the button. The Byte always cycles through the levels anytime you push the button. This time-out feature may have been patented by Petzl, but I find it quite useful. The Byte is somewhat annoying in this respect.

Update: Princeton Tec says that the battery drain issue HAS BEEN FIXED and will send me a replacement; changing my rating to four stars for good customer service.

The packaging says this headlamp will provide 80 hours of light on high setting... NOT EVEN CLOSE! After about 5 minutes the light housing becomes very warm and after 20 minutes is extremely warm. I guess this is where all the power is going - HEAT not LIGHT. After 1.5 hours it was very dim on high and at 2 hours was just a faint glow - even the heat was gone. Mine would still shut off though. I thought Princeton products were quality but now I know. I just got it yesterday so I'll try returning it to the store. It's a shame because it is a very light, small and easy unit to use. Would be a great design if it worked. I'll stick with my energizers.

Update: 4/4/11

Dick's took it back and were unaware of the issues with it.

Update 6/6/12: New packaging has been changed to read 2hrs on high. The packaging I bought it in said 80hrs on high. Not sure if PT upgraded the light at all.

This is my active headlamp at this point, but after owning several others, I have been disappointed in this one and will be replacing it soon. The lamp is sturdy, compact and lights well, however, at least with rechargable batteries, its performance is sub-par. With my low cost charger, the batteries sometimes would not last more than a few minutes. I purchased a better charger-one that conditions each battery individually, and now will get from a few hours to perhaps 10 hours of run time. I suspect that since it only uses 2 cells and it has a feature to boost light output as voltage falls, it has as rather high voltage cutout for rechargeable NiMH or NiCD cells. I feel it is foolish not to design these flashlights for rechargeable batteries. It would be better to let the light level fall with voltage and still have usable light than a few hours of light followed by a fast blinking but very dim LED once the voltage is low.

The other reviewers are right. The battery drains while it is off. Waste of money and batteries. Not worth returning it. I put the effort into this review instead.;-)

I like the Byte. You can't beat the price.
The two white levels are pretty much perfect.
I really like the red led. Its the perfect light level for getting up in the middle of the night when you don't want to have to confront full light but would like to see to get around.

The ONLY thing I DON'T LIKE is the fact that you must cycle through all three levels to turn the light off. That means you get up in the night and go to the kitchen for a drink of water wearing your nice subtle red led... very restful... then you get back to the room, just about to jump in bed and you try to turn the damned thing off and guess what? You must confront the two bright white lights! Bummer! Double bummer if, in your near-sleep daze, you forget this critical info and do it AGAIN!

Other than that. I like it ;)

Can't understand all the negative reviews. This is a great little light! I own 5 and have never had a problem with the "death mode" others have described. The focused beam is much better for night work than the wide beam of similar models. If you don't like the two hour run time on high beam (which is exactly how long Princeton Tec says it will run so not sure why this was a surprise to the negative reviewers), use the low beam setting and it will last for a long, long time.

My Byte also kills batteries when off - same designer as the Apex?
A reviewer on the REI site reported measuring a 0.5 ma drain for the Byte when off.
