Book Description

December 1, 2009

This important biography shares the inspiring story of Colorado governor Ralph Carr, who took a stand for Japanese American rights as the only political leader to welcome Japanese Americans to his state during World War II. The Principled Politician paints a vivid portrait of a courageous man largely forgotten by Colorado and never known by his country.

Adam Schrager covers politics for KUSA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Denver, Colorado. In more than fifteen years in the business, he has won numerous broadcast journalism accolades, including more than a dozen Emmy Awards. Schrager and his family live in the Denver area.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Principled Politician could easily be the screenplay for a Frank Capra movie, ala Mr. Smith Goes to Washington... ...except it's a true story, about a real man, (and it doesn't have a "justice and fair play triumphs over all" ending). Libertarians, fiscal conservatives, and history buffs will sigh wistfully getting to know colorful and quotable Ralph Carr, Colorado's Governor from 1939 to 1943, rich with firsthand details of Colorado and the nation during this period in history...What Mr. Schrager's book succeeds at, most subtly and without artifice, is to force the reader to evaluate their own moral and political compass as we walk side-by-side with the Governor, opening the morning newspaper, reading the day's mail, wondering how to manage and lead in a world gone mad. It's a sobering and meaningful exercise, of benefit to all of us who cherish the promise in "We, the people..." --libertyontherocks.com, "Where Are Today's "Principled Politician"-s? by Linda Sasenick on December 2, 2009

[Carr] has richly earned his place in history as a man who defended liberty. We thank Schrager for telling his inspiring story. --Peoples Press Collective on December 21, 2009

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Man, Great Biography, October 19, 2009
This review is from: The Principled Politician: Governor Ralph Carr and the Fight against Japanese American Internment (Paperback)
Below is what I wrote for the hardback, and I have to say that this book has stayed with me, I think of it often.

This is a great biography of a really remarkable man. With benefit of hindsight, it's so easy for us to be so critical of those who made bad choices during a time of war, and alternately slightly degrade those who made the right choices because they seem so obvious now. This book makes it clear just how high the price was for standing on principle in that era.

This is a great first book. I hope he writes more and I hope this one gets turned into a movie!
