By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Principles of Brazilian Soccer (Paperback)
Jose Thadeu Goncalves has played professional soccer in Brazil for five years and holds a Brazilian National Coaching License. In The Principles Of Brazilian Soccer, Goncalves effectively collaborates with Professor Julio Mazzei is an authoritative study of how technical skills at soccer develop. The Principles Of Brazilian Soccer meticulously examines the tactical principles the game, including insightful discussions of Brazilian soccer philosophy, methodology, coaching approaches, and more. The Principles Of Brazilian Soccer is a detailed and exceptional guide recommended especially for advanced soccer players seeking to improve their performance, as well as coaches and fans. Black-and-white diagrams illustrate some of the more complex plays, strategies, and issues.

Best Coaching Book I have read,
By
This review is from: The Principles of Brazilian Soccer (Paperback)
I have been reading many coaching books since this is my first year coaching. I have completed the NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and the USSF E license. The Instructors in My E License Course were in Love with the Dutch Style and were preaching it. It was funny because one of the students from Latin American turned to me and asked why was the instructor so obsessed with the Dutch Style. I have attended a Coaching Symposium that DC United hosted with the coaches from the Youth Academy of the Brazilian Minas Gerais team Clube Atletico Mineiro and learned some good drills to use with my youth team. This book is trying to teach some of the Brazilian training philosophy to American coaches. I realize that most of the American kids are not brought up with the Brazilian culture, but the Brazilian style of Football is the most attractive and I think that the American Coaching Culture needs to try to adopt it and try to encourage the Brazilian flair in our Young players. I think this book is a step in the right direction. It would be a good book to read before each season because I think multiple readings of the book will help the philosophy sink in and help give a Youth Coach good ideas to use in training his or her players.

Reading this book I continued to question why Americans are so in love with the English or European style soccer when this style fits them much better. This book is easy to understand and reminds us on how easy soccer can be if we just teach the kids the proper technique and let them play. A good coach will not put this book down and hopefully it will inspire them, as it did me, to push this within their clubs.

I bought the book and I'm glad that I got it. It describes very interesting approach on how to train youngsters the greatest sport on earth.
Philosophy that teaches the importance of aspects like; team work, God, thinking, enjoyment of the game. Introduces basic approach for the first time coaches on how to prepare for the job as a coach. Main topics: team's organizer, conditioning, technical, tactical foundation. It's helping me so it'll do same to you. P.S. I'm a coach with the UEFA B license. I was given a job as a coach of U15 and the book plays a role as the core of my preparation for pre-season and then season as well as foundation of the my philosophy.

This review is from: The Principles of Brazilian Soccer (Paperback)
This is a helpful book to coaches and players to enhance one's abilities and team play. I don't need to add much to what others have said.
I have found it often in reading books on Brazilian soccer that the authors often fawn over the Samba Boys and their Jogo Bonito ~ Beautiful Game, perhaps even moreso American authors. There is no argument that such a reputation is largely deserved. The author writes in the introduction: "In 1994 Brazilian soccer again burst onto the international scene in the World Cup finals. ... The seriousness of the World Cup did not seem to weigh heavily on the Brazilians; they laughed and rejoiced all the way to the championship. They were having fun." "Now, I said hoooold on there podnuh.." in the words of the great Foghorn Leghorn. Furthermore, Chapter 3 is entitled "Principles of Conduct and Behavior - Comportment." One needs to take issue with any American extolling such virtues on Brazil in regards to the USA 1994 World Cup. It is only historical fact and anyone can look this up, a Brazilian, Leonardo (coach of AC Milan is Brazilian with the same name, same person?) gave our USA National Team player Tab Ramos a fractured skull by elowing him in the temple area during the Brazil/USA game, basically a "sucker punch" of which video is widely available:World Cup USA 94: 2nd Round (United States vs. Brazil). Occuring July 4th, 1994 at the Pasadena Rose Bowl I believe, this episode occurred close to a lapse of play on the sidelines of which you normally see little play and the ball was not part of the action near Ramos and Leonardo, in fact, the next action on the pitch was going to be a throw-in. I don't mean to bring a gloomy note to this conversation nor even cast dispersions on Brazilian soccer as this does seem to be largely an isolated incident, but in this instance, the author seems to be misleading or ill-informed. International soccer tends to have elephant memories, yet this event is often overlooked at least by us Americans. Leonardo's show of poor sportsmanship not mentioned makes the author's words a bit hypocritical. That aside, Pele himself has been a good role model and ambassador of the game and the Christian and gracious Kaka along with others in the history of Brazilian football do make for some "good guys." BRUSA, the entity in charge of this book is a Brazilian/USA joint effort and are to be commended. The book is obviously about coaching pre-teens and teens. The authors need to take a stance on these things, USA will never employ tactics as we saw in 1994 with Luis Enrique being elbowed in the face, receving a broken nose and losing a pint of blood as an Italian did to him and shamefully, got away with in the game itself (the foul was later penalized) in that World Cup held in the USA, likewise, Rossi did the same to the USA's McBride in 2006, leading one to wonder if this is systematic play by the Azzurri. Fifa needs to take a stand against cheating and unsportsmanlike conduct and institute more officials on the field and instant replay. Sporting teams like the USA (at least in soccer usually), Cameroon, Japan or Ireland Republic may fall short on the "big stage" when such tactics are not in their playbooks and the opponents resort to such. Among many ugly incidences in the World Cup, this incident must be among the worst. It's something to keep in mind when you read the book or do watch "the pros", a lot of unscrupulous tactics may be on display as well. True Champions play fair and true to the spirit of the game. In fact, those using underhanded tactics truly spoil the water for everyone. |
