An excellent survey and analysis of a demanding topic,

I was a college senior in the fall of 2003 when I was instructed to purchase this book for an EE course. I remember finding the communications course very interesting, but also very difficult, ultimately ending the semester with a knowledge-base a mile wide yet an inch deep.
That may be about as much as anyone can expect from a one-semester undergrad course, but five years later, after a couple years as an R&D engineer and a couple more as a technical marketer, I came back to this text as a reference for a whitepaper I was authoring. The second time around I had a vastly up-rated understanding of the practices, and in this element I thought the world of the old Z&T. It is succinct, yet fairly descriptive, and the material flows very naturally from one topic to the next. All in all I can't recommend this text highly enough, because the bottom line is that any hardships experienced in my undergrad coursework were more to blame of the rushed, four-year curriculum than anything else. Buy this book as a student, and use it for years!

I recently finished a course on EE math (a prerequisite to a graduate EE program) using Ziemer's book. Although the book is dense and somewhat cryptic--it provided a solid bridge from an undergraduate to a graduate program (at least that's what my professor claims). I can imagine how many times I'll be referring back to this text. Principles of Communication... should be on your shelf next to Horowitz and Kraus.
