5.0 out of 5 stars Great
This book is the same as the newer version with a different model here and there but otherwise this edition and the 5th edition are the same. So save money by buying this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly worse than expected
Item was listed in good condition, I would list it as closer to average or poor. The pages are separating from the cover and there is a number of unrelated comments scribbled in there, some using profanity. But the price was certainly right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Expected, March 6, 2010

This has to be the best economics that I have ever read. This book is easy to read and comprehend and the author does not throw a lot of vocabulary words at you that would require you keep a dictionary on hand. It keeps the reader entertained and it gives you detailed examples of the different concepts that it wants you to understand. This is a great book for someone who is just beginning to step into the world of economics. It keeps you interested!

I had to get this book for a class, so I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. The book is well written and easy to understand and has examples of economic policy and their outcomes. Good if you want to learn about economics even without an instructor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Microeconomics, October 2, 2007
This review is from: Principles of Economics, 4th Edition (Student Edition) (Hardcover)
This book, despite all its charts, diagrams and those algebra/calculus-looking formulas, which apparently is what economics supply/demand is all about, was easy to read, broken up well, and kept my interest despite this being for a class that was a necessity for my degree program. It was clear and you could apply what you learn from it in basic/general terms and concepts, or really get into tne nitty-gritty technicalities of the economic system if that's your thing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction, December 22, 2007

This is one of the better books I have seen in economics. It is an excellent introduction to the field. It is comprehensive with very useful case studies from the real world.

If I want to break the review down to the two main parts of the book, I would give 4.5 stars to the micro part and 3 stars to the macro part. However, I am not aware of any good book on macroeconomics. I think most authors (or maybe all of them) just don't have a deep understanding of macroeconomics. Albert Einstein once said "if you can't explain an idea to a 6-year-old, then you don't understand that idea."

So, given the lack of better books, I would recommend this one as your starting point in economics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite textbook so far..., November 23, 2006
This review is from: Principles of Economics, 4th Edition (Student Edition) (Hardcover)
I just completed this for an introductory level class in economics. I found it the most interesting and engaging of textbooks I've had so far. I never thought of economics as especially interesting before, but I was actually looking forward to the next readings each week (the associated Applia online materials are excellent also). This actually made me start researching economics just for my own learning (my program is just an MBA one, not economics specifically). But the only problem is now that the book has whet my appetite for some more serious economics study, I'll have to figure out how to economically pursue it since there is so much to the field to explore!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to economics, January 10, 2007

This review is from: Principles of Economics, 4th Edition (Student Edition) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of economics. The material is well organized and the concepts are present in clear, concise, readily comprehensible english. Topical newspaper articles provide real world examples. The margins are used to highlight definitions and key concepts so that they are easy to find and each chapter is followed by a summary and exercises. Although this is a university textbook, the author manages to make the subject fun and as well as interesting.

Anyone wanted a better understanding of economics benefit from reading this book. Economics does not explain everything in life but it does provide an essential grounding to understand some very complex subjects such as public policy, business management and the global economy. Anyone interested in these subjects would also enjoy reading The Essential Drucker by Peter Drucker and The Other Path by Hernando de Soto (essential for understanding economics in developing countries).

5.0 out of 5 stars Concepts well explained, January 19, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a physicist trying to learn about economics. Mankiw's book does great job explaining the concepts, whereas anyone fluent with math will have little difficulty filling the concepts with equations.

I presume that I could benefit from a text with the main ideas compactly summarized in equations. However, those more mathematical texts that I have seen usually lack on the really economical substance, which si what is new for me.
