Lacks explanation,
By TP "TP" (Oradell, NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Principles of Foundation Engineering (Hardcover)
This book appears to be useful, but in reality, it isn't. The formulas are given without stating their inherent assumptions and limitations. Somewhere in the book the author states: "for an overconsolidated clay, cohesion is greater than zero; for a normally consolidated clay, it is zero." No further explanation.
This is a "cookbook" type of text, perfectly suited for today's mediocrity infested mentality: grind thru a formula and produce some numbers, fast. To that end, it's a great book. My sincere recommendation to the author: double the size of the book, and turn it into an insightful, meaningful, useful book.

Resourceful and Relevant for professional practice,

This review is from: Principles of Foundation Engineering (Hardcover)
The content of the book is extremely useful for civil and foundation engineers involved in the design and construction of foundation structures. The construction problems discussed in the examples are very relevant and helpful to the design engineers. The illustrations given in this book are fairly easy to understand which enable me to relate them to the similar geotechnical problems faced in the construction industry in my country.I may recommend the book to be one of the referenced text book for my masters degree student.I sincerely feel that this is a very good book as far as foundation design and construction practice are concern.

Excellent introductory book for foundation design and analys,
By A Customer
This review is from: Principles of Foundation Engineering (The Pws Series in Engineering) (Hardcover)
A well written text that introduces concept of foundation analysis and design. It is also a good review of basic soil mechanics. This text provides many worked out examples and supporting diagrams. I have enjoyed using this book in my studies. I have found some typo's here and there, but overall I have found the text to be worth the money.

This book came to me in perfect physical condition so no complaints with that process. My complaint lies within the content of the book. I have noticed that there are way to many mistakes in the book. Especially in the problems at the end of each chapter and the answers they give in the back of the book. You can never trust the answer they put in the back of the book because on several occations I have found the answer to be wrong. Not only that, the graphical representations and charts are way to cluttered and appear to have several examples in one figure. All of the graphs need grid lines because they are all difficult to read.

Foundations Textbook,

This review is from: Principles of Foundation Engineering (Hardcover)
This book is an ok text on foundations. There are a lots of typos in the book. My professor has to constantly add corrections to the book. He calls the text sloppy. In every edition some mistakes are corrected and new ones appear. Would not recommend this book to anyone, instead look at some Federal Highway Publications and a soil mechanics book. That will be a lot more helpful.

These guys sent me the book in the exact shape that they said it was in. It didnt come until the very last allowable day for it to arrive, but I guess that is nothing to complain about because no promises were broken.
