Book Description

June 7, 1991
"Magic" was originally published in Brnn in 1788. Not too many books have that kind of staying power. The word "magic" in the title may be a deterrent to some, however contemporary practitioners have given the word magic another meaning. Magic is the highest knowledge that exists on our planet, because it teaches the metaphysical as well as the metapsychical laws on every plane of existence. In order to attain the necessary maturity it first requires a very particular preparatory training. This book belongs to the preparatory category of magic, giving the reader a wonderful insight into the symbols of magic, as understood by the heart, not the intellect. Numbers are one of the symbol forms bearing the truths of metaphysics; these explanations are found beginning on page 260.

North American students of metaphysics often suffer from a lack of historical background, just as many contemporary students do in regards to politics and history. This is potentially damaging in spirituality as in any other arena of the world. This book contains a concept of history as well as spiritual insight. It is important to see that what you have to grapple with spiritually is not new at all to humans, and is at best only tinted by the socio-political climate. Throughout this book clear explanations are given, and a very honest critique of man is also presented. Of great interest is this critique of man, which is no less applicable two hundred years ago.

Nothing changes, but things are relative. To get a sense of past thinking which falls under the present umbrella of "New Age," and to reach such material without modern-day jargon, is an eye-opening experience. It will change your impressions about the spiritual path which most people currently share. The author's clarity makes the confusing issues of our chaotic world melt away, reminding us that "Great Secrets will reveal themselves to you. . . All we have to do is ask!" Eckartshausen challenges the readers to find personal and divine meaning among the myriad of meaningless symbols cluttering their lives. This book is an excellent treatise on Western Magic, which speak refreshingly of the nature of material reality. Eckartshausen states that imagination is indeed reality, but it is reality that needs more attention to be manifested. He warns of charlatans, of evil and of misusing an elite knowledge gained through one's exploration. More importantly, he points the way to the path of a greater understanding of Nature and gives viable insights into miracles, energy, and universal laws.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pure and enlightened work., April 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Principles of Higher Knowledge (Paperback)
"Principles of Knowledge" is a brilliantly refreshing work, giving intelligent yet frighteningly simple insights into the fundamentals of the human condition. Often the truths revealed are so obvious and clear upon reading them, that reflective thought upon one's own life is certain, and misconceptions concerning once deemed importance seem to fall away into nothingness. For those of you who have endured your way through ambiguous, and often silly, games with words and image(taken seriously) that have been categorized under the terms of philosophy, magic, or religion, welcome to a very good book. If the definition of knowledge and wisdom in your search is a lot of impressive ritual acts combined with symbols attributed to power in order to gain so called secrets of "sorcery" this is not the book for you. Why? Because this is a book of truths on a foundational level, it is a book based upon the "Principles of Higher Knowledge". Unfortunately I have found that most people seek a certain level of "bizarreness" in order to justify what they will term as magic, but this in itself reflects what they truly seek to find when they use the term "magic", and sadly it is "entertainment" only that they seek, and so they fall into believing illusion as a system for their truths, sought under a misleading guise some call magic. There is an unquestionable "purity" in this book that makes most magical systems seem trivial, because the information in this book is not a "system" and it is not a guide for domination over unseen forces, nor is it the sorcery of illusion. It is a book of power through understanding and the acceptance of who and where we are. -Eric Cantwell

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Foundation, April 15, 2003
By
This review is from: The Principles of Higher Knowledge (Paperback)
This is a cornerstone work in any Metaphysical library, of like caliber as Agrippa's books on Natural Philosophy. It is a thorough, well developed treatment of the topic. The translation from german to english has been done in a smooth and natural way so that the text is not obtrusive to the reader. It is a wonderful work that you will savor and enjoy as you work through it. The word Magic evokes all sorts of images and prejudices in Man. This book should make it clear to an open minded and intelligent reader that Magic is simply knowledge of the highest sort. I am so glad that the publisher ( Merkur) has made these germanic esotericists available here in the US. We are truly living in enlightened times.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting books ever written....., June 3, 2007
By
This review is from: The Principles of Higher Knowledge (Paperback)
I just wish this book didn't have the word magic in the title. The ignorant may misunderstand or fear the gist of this book because of it.This book is a work by a man of great intelligence, and it is a work of Christian philosophy, theology, Gnosticism, and so much more. This is not an easy read, nor is it to be read quickly and lighly. This is a book to be studied and read with a highlighter. Von Eckartshausen's book asks as well as often answers questions as to our REAL purpose on this earth (hint: it's not endless war and the total destruction of the earth!), and what God expects out of all of us. He also makes a great attack on the pseudo-religion of $$MATERIALISM$$ that is pervasive in the USA and most of the western world as well. But let me quote the book to show you what I mean. From Page 283-284 "All is harmony in the whole, but the sound cannot be heard by every ear. They cannot be heard due to the noise of the world and the racket of the scientists and philosophers. In peaceful solitude and in many hours of the night, when our Soul raises up to God, resounds the sound of wisdom out of the harmonious All of the Divinity. You do not hear the sounds under the confusion of Human Beings and the storms of passion." From Page 223 "There are powers of the Spirit which produce, and there are powers of the Spirit which rob." From Page 92 "There are circumstances among Human Beings, where everything wrong is considered right. Evil things are looked upon as good things, the truth is considered false, and falsehood considered the truth." From Page 94 "God bestows through Wisdom, benevolence, not to speak ill of others and to be deserving of His gifts, which He has given to Human Beings; because He is the Path to Wisdom and it is He who reforms the "Sage"." From Page 149 "To establish order, chaos has to be eliminated and not the order. Cleansing means elimination. The goal is clearness, not pollution and disorder." I laughed aloud when Von Eckartshausen talked about his era (the 1790's) and how ignorant people were. He should have been in the USA in 2007. So, in summary, I have a recommendation for any intelligent soul who has stumbled upon this review and this book - Turn off your TV. Tune out from the trashy American pop culture of our current era that is foisted on the public by sleazy companies such as Viacom and GE. Buy this book, read it, and contemplate what you read in this book. It has real value.
