Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book's strengths include its ability to explain in plain language the beauty of economic theory; the concise manner in which real world examples are integrated into the text; and, the online assistance that does an effective job in complementing the text."

"I think that the greatest strengths are that it is clear (written in a student-friendly language), relatively concise, and provides a good coverage of what I think students need to know about principles of economics. I think that the style of the text is personable and is easy for students to read without being condescending. In terms of the coverage, as I noted above, we cover the entire text in my one-semester class, and cover just about exactly the entire text - no more, and only a little (two chapters) less."

"I find navigation process very simple. I am very impressed with Meet your tutor - Master the Learning Objectives section (that is so well planned out and organized). If students are having problems with any of the material and they're serious about being successful in this class, it is impossible for them not to understand the material after doing suggested activities in this section. "Ask the Author" video clips are interesting and clever. "Economic Applications" section also has good navigation system and can be useful for teachers and students both."

I purchased this book for use in my ECON 230 class at my local community college. I so far have sound it to be very well written. The author makes a point to communicate his information in a manner understood by all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent base of macro econ knowledge, January 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Principles of Macroeconomics (Paperback)
Textbook for Macro-econ at University of Washington at Tacoma for Spring 2008.

The text is well organized, edited, and presented. The author communicates complicated ideas in a concise format that is not condescending. While economics is a minefield of competing political agendas, Mankiw manages to navigate through and explain conflicting ideas and how they have affected the way we understand econ. There is no pontification, hero worship, or condemnation here. The tone is mostly detached and scholarly (as you would expect from a college text) yet engaging with frequent use of real-world examples, case-studies, and hypotheticals. Whatever your personal persuasion, expect your beliefs to be challenged.

The housing and financial crises of 2007-2008 have not invalidated the concepts explained here. These are very basic macro ideas and their application is still very pertinent today. I'm glad I decided to keep this book even after I finished my econ course.
