Book Description

PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS continues to be the most popular and widely used text in economics classrooms today. The fifth edition features a strong revision of content in all 36 chapters while maintaining the clear, accessible writing style and precise presentation that are the hallmark of this highly respected author. Dozens of new applications emphasize the real-world relevance of economics for today's students through interesting news articles, realistic case studies, and engaging problems. The new edition also features an expanded instructor's resource package designed to assist in course planning and classroom presentation, as well as full integration of content with Aplia. "I have tried to put myself in the position of someone seeing economics for the first time. My goal is to emphasize the material that students should and do find interesting about the study of the economy."--N. Gregory Mankiw.

More About the Author

N. Gregory Mankiw is Professor of Economics at Harvard University. As a student, he studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. As a teacher, he has taught macroeconomics, microeconomics, statistics, and principles of economics. He even spent one summer long ago as a sailing instructor on Long Beach Island.

Professor Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the "American Economic Review", "Journal of Political Economy", and "Quarterly Journal of Economics", and in more widely accessible forums, such as "The New York Times", "The Washington Post", "The Wall Street Journal", and "Fortune".

He has written two popular textbooks--the intermediate-level textbook Macroeconomics (Worth Publishers) and the introductory textbook Principles of Economics (South-Western/Thomson). Principles of Economics has sold over a million copies and has been translated into twenty languages.

In addition to his teaching, research, and writing, Professor Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005 he served as Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

4.0 out of 5 stars okay book, February 5, 2010

This book's lightweight and contains what you need for a typical econ course. Definitions are not brief or concise. They ARE lengthy. This book is great when supplemented by a college-level course but don't expect it to teach you microeconomis.
Different editions are the practically the same thing (scam!), so buy the older edition if its cheaper and the professor is not too specific.

Greg Mankiw (Harvard University) is indeed one of the best writers when it comes to economics -- a fairly arcane and esoteric subject to most of the populace. Fortunately, Dr. Mankiw is able to break down the fundamental principles of macroeconomics and microeconomics in such a way that it becomes digestible to the average college-age reader. I would highly recommend this text book (as well as his other textbooks).

5.0 out of 5 stars So, the U.S budget hasn't been balanced since 1969? Really!, July 11, 2011

This book will help you appreciate current news on the Economy, leaving you with open questions wanting to know more. It helps you in your personal life, home economy of "your household", purchasing habits, and how not to spend while spending. It's not a book to carry around every where you go, but you can get a glimpse of world economies without getting upset, and come up with your personal solutions to improve your "personal economy", for example; "absolute advantage" and "comparative advantage" just might bring closer ties in family and friendships. My wife and her cousin learned this concep. They now bring home more groceries than the fridge can hold. Guys, it's not a lady thing either. Get the book, but don't trade it in! Keep it in your wallet! Chaplain Donald Perry, Dallas, TX
