About the Author

Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger is a full-time professor and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Boise State University. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is the recipient of the first ever 2004 Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University. Dr. Hoeger uses his knowledge and experiences to write engaging, informative books that thoroughly address today's fitness and wellness issues in a format accessible to students. He has written several textbooks for Thomson Wadsworth, including LIFETIME PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WELLNESS, Ninth Edition; FITNESS AND WELLNESS, Seventh Edition; PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR FITNESS AND WELLNESS, Eighth Edition; PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Fifth Edition; WELLNESS: GUIDELINES FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, Fourth Edition; and WATER AEROBICS FOR FITNESS AND WELLNESS, Third Edition (with Terry-Ann Spitzer Gibson). He was the first author to write a college fitness textbook that incorporated the "wellness" concept and introduced the principle that to truly improve fitness, health, and achieve wellness, a person needed to go beyond the basic health-related components of physical fitness. As an innovator in the field, Dr. Hoeger has developed many fitness and wellness assessment tools, including fitness tests such as the modified sit and reach, total body rotation, shoulder rotation, muscular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and soda pop coordination tests. Proving that he "practices what he preaches," at 48, he was the oldest male competitor in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He raced in the sport of luge along with his 17-year-old son Christopher. This was the first time in Winter Olympics history that father and son competed in the same event.

Sharon A. Hoeger, Vice-President of Fitness & Wellness, Inc. of Boise, Idaho, received her degree in computer science from Brigham Young University. She graduated Magna Cum Laude, completing the degree in only three years. She is the author of the Profile Plus CD-ROM software that accompanies the Hoeger/Hoeger series of fitness and wellness textbooks. Her innovations in this area since the publication of the first edition of LIFETIME PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WELLNESS set the standard for fitness and wellness computer software used in this market today. Sharon is a co-author of five of the seven fitness and wellness titles.
Husband and wife have been jogging and strength training together for over 28 years. They are the proud parents of five children, all of whom are involved in sports and lifetime fitness activities. Their motto: "Families that exercise together, stay together."

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource book with a very few minor errors, March 2, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great book overall and is written by a couple who have been married for over 30 years and have been actively engaged in a healthy lifestyle all that time. I'm very much into health, though through more simple and alternative methods, but this gave me a basic working knowledge of the body and exercise which I found incredibly helpful. I found a handfull of things I would disagree with, mainly concering food and drink... such as the comment that caffinated beverages count towards your water intake... I would vehemently argue that as much proof exists to the contrary ... caffiene is also a diuretic. But I have a good underlying knowlege of food so I was able to just ignore the things I disagreed with. But the mechanics of the body and exercise were wonderful and its a good source of fact and also can be quite inspiring to read. I learned many things I didn't know, such as where you carry your fat makes a difference in your health. Knowing this was written by a couple who practice what they preach really made it even more meaningful.

~Nancy
