Book Description

September 25, 1987
Principles of Plasma Diagnostics is the most modern and comprehensive book in its field. It joins for the first time a body of knowledge previously scattered throughout scientific literature. The text is based on first-principles development of the required concepts, so it is accessible to students and researchers with little plasma physics background. Nevertheless, even seasoned plasma physicists should find insight in the lucid development of the fundamentals as they apply to diagnostics and also appreciate the work as a valuable reference. Although most of the examples of diagnostics in action are taken from fusion research, the work's focus on principles will make it useful to all plasma physicists, those interested in space and astrophysical plasmas as well as laboratory plasmas, and theoreticians as well as experimenters themselves.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This book is an important contribution and should be on the shelves of most plasma physicists. It gives diagnostic physicists access to physical descriptions of their own techniques as well as to the physics of complementary observations. It provides graduate students with an effective guide for applying theoretical concepts to their experiments.' Science

'It is a multifaceted work which will not only serve the role of its title but also provide a good teaching and research text in basic plasma and radiation theory. In summary [Principles of Plasma Diagnostics] is a pleasure to read, and an invaluable addition to any astrphysicist's library.' The Observatory

'This book provides a very good introduction to plasma diagnostics for someone starting research in the field and would be a worthwhile reference book for anyone interested in plasma physics.' Australian Physicist

Book Description

This book provides a systematic introduction to the physics of plasma diagnostics measurements. It develops from first principles the concepts needed to plan, execute and interpret plasma measurements, making it a suitable book for graduate students and professionals with little plasma physics background. The book will also be a valuable reference for seasoned plasma physicists, both experimental and theoretical, as well as those with an interest in space and astrophysical applications. This second edition is thoroughly revised and updated, with new sections and chapters covering recent developments in the field. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars broad review of plasma diagnostics, December 14, 1998

Plasma diagnsotics is very broad and difficult subject. In my case, I understand the concept of Z-Pinch plasma diagnostics with the aid of this book. However, If you have been interested in cold plasma diagnostics, this book is not only good guide book. Very detail descrption will enabel any diagnostics to be possible.

A fairly detailed look at the most common plasma diagnostic techniques (reflectometry, Thomson scattering, magnetic probes etc). Doesn't include "advanced" diagnostics such as MSE.
