This review is from: Principles and Practice of Point-of-Care Testing (Hardcover)
Full disclosure: I was a contributor to Kost's research for this book. In fact, he used to pick mine, and other people's brains to get the majority of information in this book. I instructed him on several occasions to update his outlook, or in particular, create a more 'practitioner agnostic' view of Point of Care testing. The problem with any discussion of point of care is the inherent biases and turf issues that arise between the laboratory, RT (for ABG's), the clinicians, and administrators - especially finance officials. Kost favors the lab, as do most in POC testing. This creates a tainted view of the potential of POC testing and the philosophical change required of it to truly realize the potential in changing and improving healthcare. POC testing is a 'disruptive technoloogy', but lab-centric influencers like Kost seem inable to let go of the status quo, or worse, the past. But, any info on the subject is good, as long as the reader seeks out a balanced view. For more info, seek out my work at Careside, Inc., Instrumentation Laboratory, i-STAT, and Quest Diagnostics (recently leading a business unit) and also Bill Moffitt, former CEO of i-STAT. Bill is now CEO of a nanotech POC company. I am currently advising several POC product launches through my firm, Crais Management Group,LLC in Chicago and Los Angeles. POC testing is the future of diagnostics, it is too important to just be left up to the laboratorians.
