PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSING has long been one of the leading psychiatric nursing texts for undergraduate students. This popularity is due to its comprehensive coverage of important nursing and medical concepts, the widely used stress-adaptation framework, and a biopsychosocial approach that stresses the mental health continuum and strong, current coverage of psychobiology and psychopharmacology reflecting the contemporary biological emphasis in psychiatry. The seventh edition offers a new, dynamic four-color text. The basic structure and award-winning approach of the book will be retained in the revision, accentuated by a new theoretic emphasis on evidence-based practice, which strives to decrease the knowledge gap between clinical research and everyday practice. Integrating this cutting-edge information will make Stuart & Laraia's approach unique in the psychiatric nursing market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Psychiatric Nursing, August 1, 2001

This review is from: Principles and Practice of Psychiatric Nursing (Hardcover)
This is a great textbook. Very informative without being boring. Includes personal reports from patients, families, and experienced nurses. Each chapter concludes with a short quiz to help focus on the main points. Includes assessment tools such as the Mini Mental Status Exam. Perfect for beginners. This book is a refreshing balance of educational and enjoyable reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Principles and Practice of Psychiatric Nursing, October 4, 2010

Clearly presented material in an organized manner. Examples of Communication techniques and Care Plan options are useful for students. Medication information can be found in chapters covering the diagnosis (ie: antidepressants and mood stabilizers in Mood Disorder chapter) as well as the chapter on Psychopharmacology.

2.0 out of 5 stars not very good, December 14, 2006
This book seems like a lot of BS. I got an A and I hardly used it. The stories written by actual nurses are long and boring and the patients described don't seem to have improved much. As it says on p. 191, "In fact, very few well-designed psychiatric nursing studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing care."
