The past decade has seen sweeping changes in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual disorders. Bringing the field of sex therapy up to date, the third edition of this classic work reports on a wealth of new developments in theory, research, and clinical practice. Existing chapters have been extensively revised, many with new authorship, and additional chapters added to address emerging areas of interest. Throughout, clear guidelines for assessment and treatment are brought to life by illustrative clinical material. Highlights of this edition include increased coverage of sexual desire disorders; a greatly expanded section on female sexual disorders, including a new chapter on sexual arousal difficulties in women; and a completely updated section on male sexual disorders, featuring a full discussion of Viagra and other vasoactive drugs. Other new chapters cover paraphilias and gender identity disorders. Featuring contributions from leading authorities, this volume maintains a careful balance between psychological and medical concerns. It will continue to serve as the definitive reference and text for both new and experienced clinicians, as well as students in the full range of mental health fields.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Continuing in their fine tradition, Leiblum and Rosen give those of us who are learning, providing, or reflecting on the treatment of sexual problems an opportunity to be with the best thinkers in the field. Hope for medication assistance now abounds, yet the authors succeed in conveying the rich psychological and social landscape of human sexual interaction. No one who reads this book will ever again be tempted to reduce sex therapy to a single paradigm." --Stephen B. Levine, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH

"With the growing availability of new medications and treatment options, the new edition of this classic text is extremely timely. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book highlights the importance of collaboration between medical professionals and sex therapists. A needed focus is placed upon relationship and other variables involved in sexual dynamics and sexual dysfunctions. I am thrilled to see information specific to women, as well as new medical options for men. A 'must read' for all professionals treating individuals and couples with sexual dissatisfactions." --Beverly Whipple, PhD, RN, FAAN, Rutgers--The State University of New Jersey; President, American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists

"Leiblum and Rosen have done it again. The third edition of Principles and Practice is a magnificent contribution to the field of sex therapy. It's all here--from dysfunctions and paraphilias, to issues facing our aging population and those with chronic illnesses, to the treatment of sexual minorities. Not a single major problem or population has been left out, all dealt with by some of the leading practitioners and researchers in the field. Everyone who works with sexual problems, from complete novices to experienced clinicians, can benefit from this book. It will be useful in the classroom, laboratory, and therapy office." Bernie Zilbergeld, PhD, author of The New Male Sexuality

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative But Technical, February 25, 2006
This review is from: Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy, Third Edition (Hardcover)
Because the text is a compilation of chapters by different authors, the style and content vary dramatically. The book functions very well as an introductory text for sex therapy and gives a fairly comprehensive overview of the major topics in the field.
Many of the chapters are readable and clear. Some of the chapters are filled with complex medical terms and sentence structures that make reading difficult at best. I had to read several chapters with a dictionary web page open simply to get the sense of what the author was saying. All in all, however, the book is valuable and will remain a part of my counseling library.
