More About the Author

Hans Ohanian studied physics at Berkeley and at Princeton, where he worked on relativity with John A. Wheeler. He has taught at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union College, the University of Rome, and the University of Vermont. He is the author of several physics textbooks and dozens of articles dealing with relativity, gravitation, and quantum theory, including many articles on fundamental physics published in the American Journal of Physics, where he served as associate editor for several years. Of late, he has become interested in the ecological and economic aspects of renewable energy systems in Vermont, where he lives. His favorite renewable system is his sailboat "ARCHIMEDES," on which he cruises on Lake Champlain flying the green and blue flag of the old independent first Vermont Republic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good intro to subject, but lacks examples and applications, April 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Principles of Quantum Mechanics (Paperback)
A well written and concise introduction to the subject emphasizing the mathematical principles. This book concentrates on differential operators instead of series solutions of Schroedinger's equation making it a unique and valuable text. Ohanian shows the reader how to reduce a differential equation to a simple algebraic one using the factorization method. The text includes a very good bibliography with useful descriptions of other books. There are intra-chapter exercises designed to prepare you for the end of chapter problems, although not all of them are quite as straightforward as the author claims. The problem sets are longer and more varied than those in most other Q.M. texts and the answers to selected problems are in the back of the book. I have two major complaints about this text, each of which cost the book one star. First, there are no worked examples. Although Ohanian's explanations of the basic principles are very good, the lack of examples make some of the exercises unnecessarily difficult to solve and it forces the less mathematically gifted reader to seek another text to figure out how to complete the "straightforward exercises." Second, the book is lacking in applications. While I realize that no book could possibly adequately cover the many applications of Q.M., a few carefully written sections on specific applications would be helpful. If you need a good reference on differential operator techniques in Q.M., or a 2nd book to supplement your required text, this book could fill the bill. However, I would not recommend it as a primary text for the reasons discussed above.

Arrived quickly, in excellent shape. Tough book to read, but it is by one of the true, early masters. Highly recommend this merchant. Very fast. Fair price. Good quality. Thank you for good service

1.0 out of 5 stars Oy vey!, August 7, 2006
This review is from: Principles of Quantum Mechanics (Paperback)
Friends, avoid this text. Ohanian's descriptions are dated, nebulous, and completely unaccompanied by examples. The reader is left to figure out most of QM by themselves and is left largely unsatisfied at the end of each chapter, wondering why they spent their time on all that math.

This book is a phenomenal waste of paper and money. If this book is to be used at all, I could only recommend it as a supplement to a more thorough text, such as Griffith's Introductory Quantum Mechanics. Even then, I would never spend a hundred dollars on it. Buy used, or better still, don't buy it at all. Keep out of reach of children.
