Book Description

August 1987 Finney Principles Series
Early in his remarkable revival ministry, Charles Finney was repeatedly asked to publish authorized versions of his sermons which had been so effective in the cities where he preached. Principles of Revival contains nine sermons from Finney's first book on revival, Sermons on Important Subjects, published in 1836. Compiler and editor L.G. Parkhurst has divided the sermons into shorter chapters called "Principles."

The sermons contained in Principles of Revival are available today only in this book and are distinctively different in that they focus on the psychology of revival and conversion versus the method orientation of Finney's other books. Major themes dealt with include the necessity of preaching to the conscience, the relationship in conversion between personal initiation and the work of the Spirit, motivating the sinner to repentance, and the operation of the sinner's mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actual Sermons that Go Beyond His Lectures!, August 18, 2004

This review is from: Principles of Revival (Finney Principles Series) (Paperback)
Illustrations that Finney used in these sermons I have used myself in my own preaching (giving Finney the credit, of course). These are a great addition to his "Lectures on Revival."

Out of all the Finney books I published for Bethany House Publishers, only "Principles of Prayer" remains in print, and the other Principles Series books are hard to find.

Therefore, I believe those of you who have enjoyed my Charles Finney and Andrew Murray books will also enjoy "Prayer Steps to Serenity," which teaches truths that I learned from studying Finney and Murray for many years. The book follows a 12 Steps and Serenity Prayer format. It is available through Amazon, with ISBN 0595313043. If you know of anyone who is looking for a 12 Step devotional that will help them walk in the power of the Holy Spirit according to the scriptures, you can heartily recommend this book to them. "Prayer Steps to Serenity" was not published by Whitaker House, and it is a larger than a trade paperback (a 9 inch by 6 inch paperback) that includes devotional readings, prayers to encourage you to keep on praying as the Holy Spirit leads, a personal Journey Guide (or workbook), and a Group Journey Guide for prayer and support groups. "Prayer Steps to Serenity" is also supported by two websites that offer a lot of free guides and resources for those seeking more information about Christian recovery and starting Serenity Groups. Go to PrayerSteps.org or SerenityGroups.org for more information or to contact me about Finney.

Thank you for reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must have for those who desire revivals., August 25, 2000
By
This review is from: Principles of Revival (Finney Principles Series) (Paperback)
Principles of Revival is a much needed book at this time. It seems that the church has not only forgotten what a revival is but also the things that help to promote them. Louis Parkhurst has done a wonderful job of bringing these timeless principles to a church that seems to be wandering aimlessly in regards to this topic. Many false understandings of man's role and God's role concerning salvation are addressed. Mr. Finney has a way of not only refuting false doctrine, but also of declaring truth in a sometimes humbling and embarassing way. If we would take time to really study the "Principles" of Revival, we would be able to hold Jesus Christ up as the "Saviour" of the world, with such results as has not been seen in many days. A correct understanding of just a few of these "Principles" will also help us in our walk. I especially think the section on sinners obligation to change their hearts is enlightning. That this is a voluntary change of the will, and not some magical transformation is something that is gravely misunderstood. That sinners need only make a change of preference, to hate sin and love holiness is very crucial to knowing whether a person, including ourselves, has accepted Christ into the heart. This is seen in the fact of a life change or a negation thereof. I would recommend this book to all those who desire to experience revival either in their own heart or in their church, or better in both.
