Book Description

0521624789 978-0521624787 January 28, 2000
This textbook for upper division undergraduates and graduate students provides the ideal introduction to seismology. A student-friendly text fully details the fundamental concepts and includes a step-by-step development of the relevant mathematics. Beginning with clear examples of introductory topics such as one-dimensional problems and liquid media, the book goes on to cover most of the fundamental concepts in seismology. The author describes the application of seismology to the knowledge of the structure of the earth's interior and the origin and nature of earthquakes. Coverage includes seismic wave propagation, normal mode theory, ray theory approximation, body and surface waves, source mechanisms and kinematic and dynamic models. The book also contains appendices on useful mathematical tools and includes extensive problems that help students to understand the basic concepts in this area.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...an excellent new intermediate-level textbook." Applied Mechanics Reviews

"It contains everything I would want my graduate students to have as their initial core knowledge of seismology as they delve into their research. All concepts, both theoretical and observational, are concisely explained within a few pages, and descriptions are crisp and clear. Overall, the whole book is built on the accumulation of such concise, well-written short segments...It would be a good introduction for students who are to become well-balanced researchers." Physics Today

"bridges the gap to the more advanced books on seismology...The author has produced a very instrustive textbook with considerable attention to educational value, as well as historical detail. The book is very well and consistenly organized, with numerous illustrations, which makes it very suitable as a textbook for introductory seismology courses." Pure appl. geophys., Vol 158 2001

" The books pedagogy is excellent. I like this textbok and I recommend it to students, teachers, and applied geophysicists. At a time when textbook prices are soaring, this book is very reasonably priced. It is a good value." Richard Nolen-Hoeksema, University of Michigan

"Agustin Udias book<
"Udia's book provides an excellent, broad overview of seimology. I would be happy to go throug it in reading courses with my own gratuate students. It would be a good introduction for students who are to become well balanced researchers." Physics Today (2000)

"rich in illustrations...Students who take a course based on this book should certainly certainly encounter smooth sailing at the next level of study." EOS 18 Sept 2001

"This book offers a systematic and unified treatment of Seismology not only as the study of the generation, propagation and recording of waves but as a multidisciplinary science. The importance of the study of Seismology is manifold. It is the basis for the investigation of the key elements of the tectonic processes, of the physical properties of the interior of the Earth and Planets, of the seismic risk and of the work toward the prediction of earthquakes...This is a very good, student-friendly, textbook for use by graduate students and teachers in seismology, and can be very useful for scientists as a quick reference book. It should be an absolute necessity on the bookshelves of seismologists for some time to come." Earth Science Review(2001)

Book Description

This is a text on seismology at the introductory level. It covers most of the fundamental aspects of the subject and is intended to be as student friendly as possible, but with enough detail of mathematical developments and with emphasis on understanding fundamental concepts. The author describes the application of seismology to the knowledge of the structure of the Earth's interior and the origin and nature of earthquakes. The book contains a large number of figures to help make the text more easily understood, together with extensive problems and exercises.

4.0 out of 5 stars Principles of Seismology, February 13, 2002

This book is an excellent book for begining graduate students. It tuches almost all aspects of seismology. I am very satisfied by the way the topics are presented. However, I found a typing error on page 241, equation 13.10 in which the second summation index m runs from -1 ( negative one) to l (the english alphabet l "el"). This should read from -l (negative "el") to l ("el").
