5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece., August 2, 2010

This review is from: Principles of Systems (Paperback)
Jay Forrester (MIT) observed that even the most complex nth order dynamic system can be modeled using just 2 types of variables: 1) "levels" ("states", accumulations of cause & effect) and 2) "rates" ("policies"; flows of influence). These variables are necessary and sufficient for modeling the multiple, interacting feedback loops which essentially describe a complex system's causal structure: the structure which produces the system's behavior. Once modeled, assumptions can be tested, and dynamic implications explored, safely and with low cost, ... in virtual time and space, using widely available computational resources. Jay Forrester's work, in effect, offers human beings another faculty of perception: the ability to perceive dynamic complexity. The type of complexity which characterizes the most relevant and important problems facing humanity.

This book is a real treasure in the human legacy of good ideas.
