About the Author

Author, speaker, and sidewalk theolgian, Cheri Cowell is passionate about discipleship and challenging the body of Christ to holiness of heart and life. As the author of Direction: Discernment for the Decisions of Your Life (Beacon Hill, 2007) and over 300 articles, Cheri’s love of story and the Holy Word shines through in her writing and teaching.
In 2009 Cheri was one of six Christian journalists chosen to tour the Holy Land as a guest of the Israeli Ministry of Tourism, a blessing that only deepened her love of the parables Jesus told. In 2011 she earned a Masters in Theological Studies degree from Asbury Seminary, where Cheri studied under Dr. Brian Russell, who apprenticed under Dr. Robert A. Traina. It is his Inductive Bible Study method combined with Dr. Russell’s own Missional Hearmenuetics that has given Cheri a newfound joy in studying the Bible and its Grand Narrative.
From her twenty-years in both professional and lay Christian ministry, Cheri has wrestled with the realities of living a Kingdom life. Through writing and speaking she shares this sidewalk-tested faith to encourage, challenge, and equip the body of Christ to live Story-shaped lives. She and her husband, Randy, both native Floridians, currently live in Orlando, Florida.

More About the Author

Cheri Cowell has always had a lot of questions about faith and life. Through years of trial and error she has wrestled with these questions, not satisfied with the pat answers given by most scholars and teachers. In seeking answers, Cheri earned a Masters In Theological Studies from Asbury Theological Seminary, Orlando, FL. Today Cheri is an author, speaker, and a "sidewalk theologian" as she speaks and writes about the often complicated things of God making them understandable - hearing from Cheri is like talking with a good friend who helps you hear how God has answers for your life's questions.

Cheri's Bible study, Parables and Word Pictures won the Selah Award for Bible studies

Format: Paperback
Some of the most pointed word pictures from Jesus were his parables. How can you understand these stories and how they apply to your daily life? Cheri Cowell has studied these stories and created a remarkable resource in PARABLES & WORD PICTURES. As Cowell writes in the opening pages, "Parables use objects and situations common to the audience for whom the parable is given. But when these scenarios are no longer common, we must do a little digging to fully understand what Jesus was saying then and now." (Page 3)

I love the layout and easy to use format of PARABLES & WORD PICTURES. This thirteen week Bible study is perfect for individuals or small groups. The combined Biblical insight is combined with pick-up-your-pen-and-write-in-the-blanks space. If you are looking for a fresh look at the parables of Jesus, then I recommend this book.

Our small group used this study last year and found it a great encouragement to both young and older Christians. It generated good sharing with all levels of seekers.

I have used all but one of the Following God series, and have enjoyed them all. This newest book though is avg. to below avg.. A lot of the questions are so simple and basic it seems Cowell is dumbing it down for the reader. Some of her points I had a hard time following and agreeing that they are even accurate interpretations of scripture. The last few chapters talk about how Paul references many of Jesus parables in his letters . This is pure conjecture, as he didn't spend time with Jesus . even the correlations Cowell makes with his letters and Jesus parables are a stretch at best.
