4.0 out of 5 stars very good little handbook, but really ugly
This book is full of information, and is really well laid out. I use it frequently in the 2D class I teach, along with two other 2D design books. I like the clarity and the examples. However, there's no getting away from the fact that although this book is loaded with great stuff, that it is also as ugly and cheesy looking as a bad Xerox. That might be okay for a math...

1.0 out of 5 stars big disappointment
This book, along with the three-dimensional conterpart, is the most over-rated item I ever bought from Amazon. Wong himself designed the layout and that should be an indication of the flat, dry delivery of the information. I can't imagine a design book being less inspiring. There are no real world examples of anything, only black and white exercises. For that, a much...

5.0 out of 5 stars A tiny gem, November 18, 2000
By A Customer
A romp through the construction of visual form and pattern. This book is subtle yet deep. Although the example designs are not exquisitely rendered (but rather student projects), the principles that Wong exposes should be part of any designers knowledge base.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic of the biz!, March 1, 2008
By
divaRead (Santa Monica, CA USA) - See all my reviews
A definitive classic for any true graphic design student, as it shows the fundamentals of developing a designer's eye in the relationship of objects in space in conveying communication through imagery. A bit abstract in terminology for the armchair reader, but its foundational language still manages to be engaging and thought-provoking for designers, seasoned and newbie alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heart of the Matter, June 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Wucuis Wong's Principle of Two-Dimensional Design goes straight to the matter of designing with basic elements (line, shape, direction, texture)and the various approaches an artist can take to develop meaningful and interesting designs. He does not rely constantly on associating design ideas with great works of art, as do most design books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great intro to 2D design, November 20, 2008
When I was in art school, our teacher used examples from this book to help us understand and explore 2D design. I just bought it recently to refresh my knowledge of the basic elements of design and to find a new direction for my printmaking. This tiny book is a great guide. Use is to help you explore all the possibilities that 2D design can offer you as an artist. You need to grow with this book. The book will not tell you what and how to do it.

For that, a much better choice would be the Dover publication, "Notan" by Bothwell and Mayfield; an inspiring little book that has everything Wong's lacks. Teachers, please have mercy on your students and use "Notan" or any book by Paul Zelanski and Mary Pat Fisher.
