5.0 out of 5 stars The UnderWater bible, July 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Principles of Underwater Sound 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
An excellent introductory text to the subject of underwater acoustics. Structured according to the different factors of the sonar equation, the books leads the reader into the various aspects of the subject. I was happy to learn that this book is once more in print after a long period in which it was unavailable. In short - a must for every person interested in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn ocean acoustics from the master., December 9, 2010

This review is from: Principles of Underwater Sound 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
As an oceanographic acoustics engineer, I truly treasured Robert Urick's books. His depth of in-ocean experience and research familiarity is unparalleled, and much of this oozes out in hundreds of little doses throughout his books. As others have stated, his ability to concisely convey this information is remarkable, and not to be missed. Back in the day he used to give one-week intensive acoustics courses, and these were not to be missed either. Now we have to content ourselves with his books. Some of us have copies annotated during one of his lecture series. These are to be doubly-treasured. But for the rest of you his original book will do just fine. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone working in underwater acoustics, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Principles of Underwater Sound 3rd Edition (Hardcover)
I have had this book 2 years now. I have to agree with most of the reviews previously. Prof. Urick makes everything really simple. He uses decibels, after explaining thoroughly what and why. He turns the complicated, sometimes frustrating equations of the Physics of underwater acoustics into a linear (adding and subtracting) problem. Simple, understandable, practical. Definitely a must read, and an excellent reference.
