This review is from: Energy Principles and Variational Methods in Applied Mechanics (Hardcover)
I used this as a book for an independent study course that I took in grad school. I can no longer remember why. Probably because I couldn't find anything else. This is a topic which is typically done in a sloppy fashion in many textbooks and courses and this book is no exception. The derivations are confusing and there's no explanation for any consistent techniques that work. Everything seems to be trial and error. Energy methods are rarely used by themselves these days. If your goal is to understand the principles of finite element methods for continuum mechanics and structures, then buy Reddy's finite element book instead.
