Code errors confuse my students,
By Jerry Deutschendorf (Oklahoma City, OK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Principles of Web Design (Paperback)
I'm a full-time web development instructor with both high-school and returning adult students. I am using this book in my web design class. I liked the introductory chapter and the chapter on tables. However my students and I have run into a number of code errors (especially in the frames chapter) that are unacceptable. So I will continue looking for an excellent instructional book on web design. This book doesn't fit that criteria and I will not force it upon future students.

Too Basic, only useful part of the book is the CSS but it's very limited,
By JVUE05 (Sunny California) - See all my reviews

This book is a bit outdated but it was required for my Web Development and Design class for college. If you have NEVER been exposed to HTML or CSS then you will find it helpful. If you already know HTML and only need to learn CSS, you are better off learning CSS off the web or a book dedicated to CSS. With this book we had to use the Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 book by Shelly Cashman Wells Freund. For the brand new price of this book, it would be wiser to spend that extra money elsewhere. But if you really need this book you should rent the book for class from Chegg (that's what I did).
I started HTML in 1998, the only thing I saw useful was using CSS to make your pages uniform. The book doesn't really teach how to make re-usable templates which would have been useful. You're better off getting a reference book if you want to learn HTML & CSS tags and how to use them.

Principles of Web Design,
This review is from: Principles of Web Design, Second Edition (Paperback)
Clearly written/explained for the beginner or for an easy-to- follow review of HTML. Pages are well laid out and easy to read. It's important to me to be able to read the text while sitting in front of the monitor, therefore a book should be legible at "lap height". My only complaint is that "figure" examples should printed on the same page as the text explaining them.

My beginning web design class uses this (along with a "Master VISUALLY Dreamweaver CS4 and Flash CS4 Professional") to define and teach the princles for correct web design. This book is definitely good for understanding the principles involved in web site creation and implementation. Specifically, how to build a web site to your individual audience and concerns to have when organizing, creating, and designing the content of the site. It's very thorough for this means. I understand that there are some 'coding' issues with some of the examples shown in the book. I have not actually followed any of the examples but use it as a learning point of what to do/not to do for my own web site.

This book has been very helpful in understanding web design concepts and terms. I recommend it for anyone who is beginning with web design and looking for reading material that is easy to understand and not boring to read. I particularly appreciate the hands on experience offered throughout the chapter as well as at the end of each chapter.

This textbook was a requirement for web design. An intermediate course. This book is just way tooooo basic and a little confusing with items that should not be confusing. The moment I bought it, I returned it immediately as I knew it would not teach me anything. I was right and got a B+ in the class.
You can probably learn more by viewing the HTML of any website of your choosing.

A Very Useful Resource, User Friendly,
By Karen (Massachusetts, USA) - See all my reviews

This was one of the better web design books that I have read. It ranks even above HTML Goodies web design books. From an experienced web designer I recommend this book greatly.
