“[A] handsomely designed cornucopia of ideas...This is more than just a craft book.”—Booklist

“It’s full of ideas not easily found elsewhere.”—School Library Journal

On paper, plastic, or cloth, and decorated with stamps, stencils, and markers: here’s the way kids can get their work into print. Every lively page, bursting with boxed tips, color photos, and drawings, turns the publishing process into an adventure. Unique projects display dozens of creative ways to showcase words—books and beyond. Write your thoughts on a memory frame around a photograph. Turn a jewel of a poem into a charm bracelet: copy it onto shrinkable plastic, cut the words into cool shapes, and stick them in the oven to harden. Plus: amazing writing secrets, advice on making design decisions, inside info on famous authors, comments from real kids about how they get ideas, and more.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-This attractive book includes many projects that showcase poetry and writing. The emphasis is not so much on the written word, but rather on crafts to encourage kids to turn their writing into gifts or visually appealing projects. Layout and design decisions, including colors, space, paper, binding, and handwriting styles, are covered. Projects include a memory frame, a calendar of words, accordion books, a literary luminary, a book on tape with sound effects, magnetic words, a mood mobile, place mats and dinnerware, scrolls, a poetry lightbox, newspapers, plays, and more. Full-color photos of kids and their finished projects appear on every spread. Boxes also highlight well-known writers, such as Jane Yolen, and interesting facts about their success and publishing secrets. This book is not for beginners as the ideas and instructions assume some knowledge and the directions are not completely clear. While it may not encourage quality writing, it does encourage children to showcase their work, and it's full of ideas not easily found elsewhere.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-7. Kids who love words and want to do something with them will enjoy this handsomely designed cornucopia of ideas. Among the 40 projects are poem bracelets, books on tape, family newsletters, and books to house a young writer's words. This is more than just a craft book. Introductory and closing chapters help children kick off their writing careers by advising them on where to get ideas, design strategies, and how and where to publish. Even those not initially attracted to the subject may be enticed to the projects by the look of this book. Fresh, white pages feature cutout photographs, brightly colored boxes of information well integrated with the easy-to-read text, and tempting pictures of the projects. Ilene Cooper

5.0 out of 5 stars A knock-out olio of super fun projects for cool kids !, January 1, 2006
This review is from: In Print!: 40 Cool Publishing Projects for Kids (Paperback)
Fun stuff! Wow- there is too much fun to be had in this book, targeted to fourth to sixth graders- I get a buzz just flipping through the pages- such a nice texture and do it yourself feel- and so LO tech- there aren't any batteries needed- or airport connections. This book is about creating forums and objects that display or convey written words by kids. Included among the 40 projects are: how to start your own newspaper how to create a poetry lightbox, a mini book necklace, a placemat, magnetic word kit, and plastic pocket doorway curtain! Included in the book are ohotos of young people and their quotations about their writing life... I cannot imagine a young person or educator (or parent) with the right vibe who would not be creatively inspired for hour and hours with all the ideas contained in this book. Really fun stuff!
