3.0 out of 5 stars Printmaking - slim overview, July 9, 2009

This review is from: Printmaking Handbook (Artist's Bibles) (Spiral-bound)
This small (note stated dimensions) book has a brief overview of a multitude of printmaking techniques. Many, if not most, of the techniques are limited to just a couple of pages. The best use of this book is as a jumping-off point for deeper research. It will help teach some of the language of printmaking, provide comparisons between techniques, and help familiarize with tools and materials. I was spoiled by "Complete Printmaker" by John Ross, which covers just as many techniques as this book addresses, but in much, much greater depth and scope. And since most of my printmaking is done on cloth, I also have enjoyed "Printmakng + Mixed Media" by Dorit Elisha and "Monotype" by Julia Ayres. Hopefully, Amazon will be able to write a summary for this book soon, or get one from the publisher.

3.0 out of 5 stars Generic Information, April 18, 2010

This book is far from an "Artist's Bible" as it is labeled. It only provides very basic information on each of the techniques. You could consider it a starting point for research, but I would suggest doing research on the web (for free) rather than buying this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best for beginners, January 20, 2012

This review is from: Printmaking Handbook (Artist's Bibles) (Spiral-bound)
Good beginners' book, written for high school and above. This covers the main types of printmaking. It has several pictures of the various stages of each of the processes. The quality of these pictures range from very nice to worthless. I liked the close up detail shots, but some general process pictures were a waste of space. There is enough information here for you to attempt each process while discovering which you want to pursue further. It is mainly an overview of the processes, but is probably too basic for someone with experience in printmaking.
