From Library Journal
Art historian Gilchrist has provided a valuable service to scholars and museums by updating a catalog of prints that were thought in the early 20th century to be modeled on paintings and drawings by the 16th-century Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch. Included in this volume are Lafond's chapter on prints after Bosch from his 1914 book; earlier catalogs of prints after Bosch by Adam Bartch, J.D. Passavant, Alfred von Wurzbach, and G.K. Nagler that served as sources for Lafond; and Gilchrist's version of Lafond's catalog updated with references to publications about these prints that have appeared since the earlier catalogs by Lafond and his forerunners. Gilchrist has translated the Lafond chapter but presented the others only in their original French or German. A single version of each print is shown in a quarter- to half-page black-and-white photograph. Although all of the catalogers agree that the prints presented are not by Bosch, Gilchrist goes further in asserting that even paintings still generally thought to have been painted by Bosch are not actually from his hand. However, this thesis receives only minimal support in her brief introduction. Because of the sections in French and German and the references throughout to scholarship examining the attribution of each print, this book is recommended only for specialized scholarly libraries.
