Reginald Marsh was a member in good standing of the outstanding group of New York artists who gave us such a rich portrait of NYC in the first half of the Twentieth Century. As was true for most of them, the financial rewards directly from his art was sufficient to starve upon, but teaching, illustration and other activities allowed him to live and produce for us a wonderful portrait of some aspects of his City. Coney Island, the Bowery, Burlesque, subways and railroad trains, were among his favorite subjects, people were almost always part of the picture. The best of the thoroughgoing studies of his life and work appears still to be the Big Book by Lloyd Goodrich. (Do not buy the Goodrich volume currently listed by Amazon at eleven dollars. It is a brief outline of an exhibition then touring the country not the major work to which I refer.) Marilyn Cohens, Dover book, is a good one for the price and would serve as a sketchy introduction to his oeuvre. I have not seen the new book (2012), 'Swing Time: Reginald Marsh and Thirties New York' by Barbara Haskell, et al, a catalog to an exhibition, but the authors' list is led by notables and it should be good.
The work being reviewed is a catalogue raisonne of his prints, the only such effort extant. Fortunately, a major collector had purchased as complete a collection as is available and his widow still possessed many of the original plates, so that the author, a friend, was able to do a fine job of providing as good a coverage as is likely be possible. ( Of no interest to anyone but me, I was in the employ of William Benton's advertising agency while Marsh was still alive.
