Book Description

2012
An exciting new fiction thriller where fear has no boundaries. Several world-renowned scientists in the field of synthetic biology have been brutally murdered. The FBI launches an investigation to recover the remaining scientist, a Nobel laureate who has made extraordinary breakthroughs in understanding of prions--infectious renegade proteins that are capable of causing rapid and nearly universally fatal brain disorders. Special Agent Liz Holder, heading up the FBI counterterrorism unit, recruits Dr. Aurelio Galvano, an ex-Special Ops physician with expertise in weapons of mass destruction. The killings are ultimately linked to a sophisticated and secretive Islamic fundamentalist terror organization working to gain access to America's most closely kept secrets. While high-level government officials pull out all the stops to keep their involvement hidden at any cost, Liz and Aurelio chase leads around the world to stop an unprecedented attack on the West that aims to redefine the meaning of terror.

I just finished reading Prion almost without putting it down. It is extremely well written, thought provoking, nerve wracking and at the same time a very fun read. As a neuropathologist with an interest in prion diseases, the story truly resonated and I believe I recognized a few familiar personalities (names changed to protect the innocent, of course!). The prion diseases are among the most relentless and horrific disorders imaginable, and the thought of these agents being used as bioweapons is truly deeply terrifying.

At one level this book is an extremely well crafted thriller with believable and multi-dimensional characters, intrigue, twists and turns, and action. But it is so much more. It brings into sharp focus the dangers of bioterrorism that have been amplified dramatically by recent advances in biomedical sciences. The risks, moral ambiguity and strategic necessity of preparing for possible use of frightening new classes of agents is discussed thoughtfully and thoroughly as the tale unfolds. Also, the nature of the asymmetrical threats we now face and the fluid organizational, economic and geographic features of potential foes are explored.

The authors bring unique expertise and credibility to the story. Dr. Subbarrao is Director of the Public Health Readiness Office at the American Medical Association Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response and Dr. Hsu is the Director of Training at the Johns Hopkins Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response. It is their job to think about and plan for the worse case scenarios that nature or man can unleash. Prion describes one such scenario. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good work, doctors November 19, 2011
Format:Paperback
PRION. As a physician who has treated patients with prion disease, the very word can cause my blood to run cold. With the rapid evolution of molecular biology, the possibility of a readily transmissable form of these deadly subviral agents has become real. Combine this possibility with the political uncertainities of today, and we have a first rate thriller. With their experience in disaster preparedness Drs. Hsu and Subbarao have created a work of dramatic intensity that captures the dilemma the Western world faces in an era of potential bioterrorism. Definitely a great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Read April 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book that should become a movie! It keeps the reader engaged from the first to the last page. Although this is a brilliant work of fiction, it is evident that the two authors, who are medical doctors, are knowledgeable about cutting edge technology as well as the use of biological weapons of mass destruction. The well-developed characters keep your interest in this international spy thriller and the plot is suspenseful and frighteningly believable. Bravo!
