This book is for experienced crocheters who want to expand their knowledge. It's a reprint from 1912 so the instructions are not what you are used to. Read the conversion chart. The materials they mention are not readily available, so use your experience to tell you what to use. There is no basic instruction on making stitches or how to work with packing cords. It launches right in to edgings and follows with more and more difficult and intricate motifs. The flowers and butterflies are beautiful. There are patterns for some evening bags and collars; neither of which we need, but you can use motifs for something else.
I have made one of the butterflies. On my first try, I used bedspread cotton and large hook in order to get a handle on the progression of stitches. It turned out pretty well, but I'll use my experience to make it a little easier next time. The edgings, I've made have been pretty easy. Also, it is sprial bound, which is very handy as you will want to have it open to keep track of what you are doing. Use a pencil to mark off the steps you have completed and you will avoid frustration!
If you want to learn some more Irish crochet motifs, you will enjoy this book.
