Being three books in one, I'll address each individually. Book 1: Marie learned she was adopted of all places on a playground. Being an adoptive mother myself, Marie's whole journey tugged at my heartstrings perhaps more than the average person but one cannot help be enraged to see not only how she found out but how her adoptive parents treated her over the years. Marie's writing is so vivid you will feel like you are there and feel every heartache. For me, it gave me great insight into what an adopted child might feel like from someone other than my own child. It also confirmed my belief that even though one searches for their natural parents, they still look to their adoptive parents for love and acceptance and do not wish to replace them. Book 2: The search for therapy and treatment apparently is as difficult in Britain as it is here in the United States. Anyone who has been in those shoes or knows someone who has will relate to the struggle of getting help, how long it takes and the almost never ending search for something that works. Book 3: Marie shows us that with perseverance one can heal and learn what coping mechanisms work. For Marie it was through DBT (dialectal behavioral therapy), a strong support system, a loving husband and children and a will to keep going. While this may not be a book for the faint at heart, I believe it is an important read for adoptive parents and/or caregivers of those with mental illness.
