Editorial Reviews

What happens when a struggling rural town tries to revive its economy by inviting a prison in? PRISON TOWN, USA weaves the absorbing tales of a laid-off mill worker-turned-guard, a tenacious dairy owner fighting "Prison Industries," and a transplanted inmate family over the course of two years. With these engrossing narratives and a background chorus of vivid voices, from lifer inmates to local ranchers who say they were duped, prison-boosting politicians to teenagers looking for a way out of town, PRISON TOWN, USA reveals the untold story of the legacy of America's prison building frenzy on hundreds of rural prison towns that once invited them in.

Called "intriguing" by The New York Times, "engrossing" by LA Weekly, and "documentary making at its best" by the San Francisco Chronicle, PRISON TOWN, USA sheds light on the proliferating prison network that is dramatically altering the landscape of rural America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very telling documentary January 1, 2010

The only dispute I have with this documentary is the number of people they say are in America's prisons (the information I have shows it to be much higher). But the film has many, many merits. Most especially it describes what prisons do to the people OUTSIDE the bars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prison Town USA, A MUST SEE September 26, 2008
Kate and Po did an excellent job in the making of the documentary. It is a MUST SEE for anyone that has any involvement in the prison system or the town of Susanville, CA. Depicting the trials and tribulations of those that are incarcerated there and the people that work and live there. Excellent film !! Well done ladies, kudos to you both !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good show March 2, 2013

This is a fantastic documentary about how prisons impact the community overall. The vast prison expansion and prison building has lead to many impacts, both positive and negative. This documentary shows how the lives in a town are impacted when a prison opens in their community. Told from many points of view. Worth watching!

3.0 out of 5 stars Hicktown August 20, 2010

Interesting, but very slanted. Accually, Susanville is a widespot on a major route between Reno, Nevada, and Oregonian highlifers. Susanville is a town of Protestant churches, bars, and government employees. Such as the famed T & A saloon - you can guess what the T and the A sbreviates.
