Doctor Who Perfection,
By
This review is from: Prisoner of the Daleks (Hardcover)
As a Doctor Who fan for the last 28 years...from the original series to the new realization of the series...I am quite picky about my Doctor. Add Daleks to the mix and it is even harder to get past my Doctor Who snobbishness. But this book is absolutely outstanding. From start to finish I kept thinking how much I would love to see this story as an episode. The story is the strongest of any of the new books I have read so far, the Daleks are treated with care by Baxendale and their insanity is well detailed throughout the book. Dalek X is a wonderful addition to the mythology of Doctor Who. Great characters, excellent job handling the ultimate villains and a plot that doesn't sag anywhere along the way.

Great Tenth Doctor Story,
By rnorton828 "rnorton828" (Riverbend, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prisoner of the Daleks (Hardcover)
Since the relaunch of the BBC's classic science fiction series, Doctor Who, BBC Books has published a series of novels involving the Doctor's ninth and tenth incarnations. These books also include the Doctor's traveling companions and supporting characters from the new series, as well as some recurring villains from the show in addition to some original baddies. In "Prisoner of the Daleks," author Trevor Baxendale brings the Doctor's current regeneration (as played on television by actor David Tennant) face to face with his oldest enemies at a time when they are at the height of their reign of terror.
In the new DW program, the writers and producers have established that the Doctor's people, the Time Lords, fought the Daleks at some point during the gap between the original and new series. This conflict, known as the "Time War," resulted in the near total destruction of both races. The Doctor is (or at least believes himself to be) the last survivor of the Time Lords, and the Daleks are no longer the mighty, all-conquering force they once were. Baxendale manages to bring the Doctor across the time lines of Dalek history and encounters his old foes at the peak of the Dalek Empire. "Prisoner" is set during the twenty-sixth century, as Earth, now the center of the First Human Empire, is now engaging the Dalek Empire in the Second Dalek War. The story begins on Hurala, where the Doctor is tracking a strange signal he's picked up on the TARDIS scanners. Hurala is a barren planet which had once been used as a refueling station for commerce and exploration vessels, but has long since been abandoned. While seeking the source of the signal, he unwittingly locks himself in a small room. The Doctor is discovered hours later by the crew of the Wayfarer, led by Captain Jon Bowman. Bowman's crew had come to Hurala seeking fuel, but they have also detected the same signal being followed by the Doctor. They discover it's part of a trap set by the Daleks. After a brief skirmish, Bowman and his shipmates escape in their ship with the Doctor in tow. One lone Dalek manages to board the Wayfarer before takeoff. Bowman's men are able to subdue the creature, but not before it kills a member of the crew, a young lady named Stella. Aboard the ship, the Doctor learns that Bowman and his crew are bounty hunters paid by Earth Command to kill Daleks. The Wayfarer crew keep the Dalek cryogenically frozen in the ship's hold until they remove the mutant creature from the metal casing which houses its life support, transport and weapons systems. Bowman wants to interrogate his prisoner to find out what the Daleks were doing on Hurala. The Doctor strongly disapproves of Bowman's plan to interrogate, as well as the torture techniques employed by the captain. The mutant dies without talking to Bowman, but does speak briefly to the Doctor in its final moments. From that conversation, the Doctor gains a clue as to the Daleks' plan, which involves the use of a time rift on the dead planet Archeon, which they intend to utilize to alter history and erase the human race from ever having existed. But things go dreadfully wrong on Archeon, and the Doctor and the Wayfarer crew are taken prisoner by the Daleks. "Prisoner of the Daleks" is a very well-written book, which captures the feel of the Doctor Who universe, especially with the Tenth Doctor and the Daleks. Trevor Baxendale has crafted a magnificent tale which DW fans will enjoy, as well as some non-fans. "Prisoner" is the first of the New Series novels that I have read, and I am now eager to go back and do some catching up with some other Ninth and Tenth Doctor books.

A fun read!,

This review is from: Prisoner of the Daleks (Hardcover)
"Prisoner of the Daleks" is a tie-in novel of the BBC's flagstaff television program, Doctor Who. Truthfully, this book, one of many in a series, is written for a younger audience - which many older fans of the classic TV series struggle with, due to the book's light, fluffy reading. I have previously read books from this series and found myself completely unimpressed with them.
"Prisoner of the Daleks", however, surpassed my expectations. Trevor Baxendale brilliantly pulled it off with this one. He gave the story much more meat without any need of including any adult contents (i.e. profanities and extreme violence/gore) and managed to entertain both children and adults readers. The characters were very well fleshed and the story very well paced. The story keeps you engrossed and there was not much of a slowing down in the story. The villains in the book, the Daleks, were absolutely terrifying - much more terrifying than the Daleks we see on television - and at the same time, absolutely a delight! I even had a dream one night where I was chased by the Daleks after reading this book - and it was a terrifying dream! The only complain I have about this book was that the ending was wrapped up a bit too quickly. The resolution was not very satisfying as it seemed too easy a way out. I have wondered if Baxendale had to do that to keep the count of pages down because the story read as if Baxendale had so much fun with it, albeit written with love, and wanted to keep going with the story. All in all, it was just absolutely a delight to read this book! Recommended.

Audio CD of Prisoner of the Daleks,
By Sian "Sian" (San Jose, California USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doctor Who: Prisoner of the Daleks: An Unabridged Doctor Who Novel (Audio CD)
I purchased the audio CD of this book, and I loved it! The narrator has all the quirkiness of David Tennant's Doctor down pat, right down the the sarcastic tone of voice and the "asides" mumbled under his breath. The characters were well fleshed-out and the plot twists certainly had me fooled! The only problem I had with the audio version was that it was only 5 CDs long and I didn't want it to end!! Thoroughly enjoyable - I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

This review is from: Prisoner of the Daleks (Hardcover)
The Doctor, after the TARDIS has a little problem navigating, finds himself with a group of Bounty Hunters. Bounty Hunters who hunt Daleks. Oh joy! At first they are being chased by the Daleks but then turn the tables, capturing one of them.
But the Daleks are not so easy to deal with. And they have plans of their own. Soon the Bounty Hunters are being hunted again. Can the Doctor stop the Daleks? Should he help the Bounty Hunters who seem just as ruthless as the Daleks? Ethical questions mixed with tons of action and, of course, cool Daleks. The author knows the Daleks and you can tell loved them enough to do a good job in making the story with them as the main characters. Next to the Doctor of course. As always with the Daleks their plans deal with destroying all life, taking over the universe and, oh yes, taking out their number one enemy. Buy it, read it, review it.

This review is from: Doctor Who: Prisoner of the Daleks (Doctor Who (BBC Hardcover)) (Kindle Edition)
This is the first Doctor Who novel I've read so I don't have the others to which I can compare this one. I can't say that it's a brilliant work of fiction or that I'm in a hurry to reread it, but that's not why I bought it. I gave it five because it was as good as can be expected of a novel from a TV series. It's entertaining and definitely a page-turner; I completed it in just two sittings. Equally important (at least to me) was that the Doctor and the Dalek's characters were spot-on. Nothing takes you out of a story like thinking "He'd never do that!" and this book did a good job. I didn't purchase expecting great literature. I expected entertainment and a classic Doctor Who adventure, and I was very satisfied. Looking forward to expanding my collection.

This review is from: Doctor Who: Prisoner of the Daleks (Doctor Who (BBC Hardcover)) (Kindle Edition)
From the very first chapter the Doctor was thrown off course (so to speak) and from that moment onwards he was pulled or thrust into one helpless situation to another. Throughout the book I was constantly wondering "What next? What else could go wrong?" and "How's he gonna get out of this one?" I currently have over 35 Dr Who books in my Kindle's library...yet this is my first review. This one was a whopper! Some of these story lines are rather predictable. Not this one. Well, maybe after you read this...*** WARNING!! *** Very mild SPOILERS!! The tale begins when the Doctor finds himself taken back into the Daleks history, at a time shortly before a great war between Humans & Daleks goes head to head. Finding himself trapped & rescued by the not altogether friendly, neighbourhood Dalek catchers, the Doctor soon finds himself in a situation beyond his control. And there's many more to follow. The Doctor remains in the company of these Dalek hunters (who are still undefined as friend or foe) as he embarks on the latest solo adventure - confronting the ugly face of war, discovering the latest Dalek attempt to wipe humans from *time* (hint, hint) & space and then staying alive long enough to save humanity, preferably in time for tea and crumpets. This is a tale of an abandoned TARDIS, deception, ambush, death, bluffs, war crimes/torture, uneasy truces, uncertain allies, plots to take over space & time...and of course, running.. This was one of the closest shaves the Doctor has encountered in my time - loved every moment of it.

If you`re interested in reading this book, here`s a brief description of what to expect. Expect: Lots of action, edge of your seat/heart pounding suspence, the best characterization of the tenth dr yet, lots and lots of angry Daleks, exelent supporting characters, very imaginative plot, the word EXTERMINATE is said over at least fifty times, followed by DOCTOR!!!!!!, witty and funny, darkest Dr Who story yet, some very exciting scenes involving brain surgery and torture, and plenty more. I`m not going to give you an entire description on the plot and storyline. I`m just here to say that you`d be missing out on the most exicting Dr Who story yet if you didn`t read this. I`m thirteen and read this book when I was twelve. It was just so good that I had to write a review on it. If you`re a fan of the Daleks and don`t mind the killings and somtimes overly esusiastic shouts of Exterminate!!!!!, then I would highly recomend this novel. I`m a huge Dalek fan girl so, I was thrilled when I saw they had a book with the Daleks in it. It`s your usual The Doctor tries to reason, the Dalek doesn`t listen and yells Exterminate!!!! type of story. The writer also picked some interesting names for the characters: Bowman, Cuttin` Edge, and Scrum. Well I think you get the message: READ THIS!!!!!!!! So, that`s all really. I highly suggest this.

This review is from: 'doctor Who': Prisoner of the Daleks (BBC Audio) (Audio CD)
I have read the book and had tried to imagine the voices to go with the characters. I thought that reading this story was scary. Listening to it for 6 1/2 hours is over the top. I could not just stop when the disc ended. I had to know what happened next. Trevor Baxendale has written a very scary story with all of the drama and adventure that anyone could want. Nicholas Briggs brings this story to life. Dalek X is the ultimate badass of the Dalek empire. I was just shaking everytime I heard the voice for this particular Dalek. If you love Dalek stories, this is a must for any fan.
