This album is an amazing work by a singer who has a truly beautiful voice. I loved song choices ranging from ballad to swing. Additional bonus is many talented musicians are participating in the album. Including Peter Bernstein: guitar (1,6,7); Xavier Davis: piano (2,4,8,11); Michael Kanan: piano (5,10); Christian McBride: bass (1,3,6,9); Ben Wolfe: bass (2,4,8,11); Johnathan Blake: drums (2,4,8,11); Jeremy Pelt: trumpet (6).

Since I liked them all in general and each of them are really different pieces including compositions of various participating musicians, it would be hard to pick specific songs. However, if I have to, I would say two contrasting pieces of duo, one with McBride in 'All or Nothing at All'& 'Day Dream' and 'I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry', which is with Michael Kanan's piano. I should note that's maybe the matter of preferences since I equally enjoyed songs such as 'Prisoner of Love', 'Social Call' and 'Moon Ray'.

Overall, this is a great album.

Ms.Solivan came to my attention when she entered the Jazzmobile competition a few years back. I was somewhat surprised that this CD contined many ballads as I think of her as as high-energy swinger. Doesn't matter what she sings because she always does it beautifully and I love this softer side of her just as much. As you can see from her personnel her muscianship has attracted some of the big-guns in jazz. If you are lucky enough to live in the NYC area you shoujld catch her live. Hopefully she will be touring in your area.

I'm fortunate enough to have heard Ms. Solivan live, and have been amazed and gratified each time. In a world of singers who put themselves in front of the song, she immerses herself in the melody and lyrics, stretching a phrase here, pausing here, uttering the words as if their message was emotionally powerful and meaningful. She swings, and she surrounds herself with the best jazz players, and she has a wide range of material -- but all that becomes less important than the subtle yet powerful force with which she discovers her songs for us, as if for the first time. Ms. Solivan didn't start singing yesterday, but to borrow Emerson's words, I greet her at the beginning of a brilliant career.

My wife and I had the good fortune to hear Ms. Solivan live recently, purely by accident. It is hard to remember many in-person Jazz experiences that came close ours with Ms. Solivan--probably Roland Hanna, Alberta Hunter in her prime, but certainly Sarah Vaughn whose vocal richness and musicianship live in my memory like the great classical pianist and violinists I've been privileged to know and work with.

If there is any singer who takes me to back to Sarah it is Marianne Solivan, whose honesty, vocal richness and seeming inability to do anything unmusical left me awestruck. When she sings there is music, then the music, and finally the music.

I could give many analytical reasons why I believe this young singer to be remarkable, but I think it's best just to hear her. In my opinion she is the kind of artist who gives everything and who makes life much richer and beautiful.
