5.0 out of 5 stars This "Time" was the best so far.
"A Prisoner of Time" was much-much better than "For All Time" and surpassed "Both Sides Of Time," as well. This book had none stop action and was interesting. Todd could have been better developed, but that is my only complaint. I think Hiram Stratton, Sr., was shown to be a heartless human being better in this book than in the other two "Time" novels combined. I hope...

2.0 out of 5 stars I didn't like it that much.
I read both Both Sides of Time and Out of Time and was psyched when Prisoner of Time came out. I hope in the last book in this quad series, it will show why both Annie AND Todd were able to time travel - is it hereditary or just pure luck? I guess only *time* will tell...... I recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's A Time Trap!, January 7, 2000
By A Customer
Prisoner Of Time is the third book in a trilogy that includes Both Sides of Time and Out of Time. However, in this book, it follows the lives of Tod Lockwood and Devonny Stratton, instead of the characters in the first book, Annie Lockwood and Strat. When Tod is up at Stratton Point refueling on its natural spring water, he is unwillingly taken by time. Once Tod realizes what has happened, he is in the year 1899. Time has dragged him here to rescue the wealthy Stratton girl. I really liked this book a lot but I was slightly disappointed in the fact that it wasn't about Annie and Strat, because I'm anxious to see what happened to them. I also hope that Caroline B. Cooney comes out with an addition to this trilogy soon! This book is great if you like Science Fiction/ Time Traveling stories with a great plotline!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the "time" series, September 24, 2000
By
A Prisoner of Time was another great book in the "time" series by Cooney, and in my opinion, the best!

Devonny Stratton is disgusted when she finds that her wealthy, 1890's father is forcing her to marry the English Lord Windon. She's only sixteen, and she has already made plans for her life! And modern Todd Lockwood has never wanted to get involved with a girl, much less one from the last century. However, when Devonny needs help, it seems as if Todd is the answer to her prayers...

I loved this book, and I think it's a great addition to the series! However, I think that another book or two is needed, about Annie and Strat... and maybe Flossie and Gianni? :)

This was a great book on time travel, romance, and adventure, and I'd recommend it for ages 12 and up. Be sure to read the others in the series, too - Both Sides of Time and Out of Time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great end to a terriffic trilogy, August 20, 2000
A Kid's Review
Despite what others say, I found Prisoner of time one of the best books in the trilogy. This one offered a change of pace- instead of someone stepping back in time, someone stepped forward. I liked having a change of main characters- Tod and Devonny- as well.

I really hope that this isn't the end of this series! Caroline B. Cooney has elaborated on this idea and makes it seem so real- sometimes I wonder if I'm going to fall back to 1900! A great end to a terriffic trilogy!

5.0 out of 5 stars =o), July 2, 1998

This review is from: Prisoner of Time (Hardcover)
I Love these books! I need more, I find I have too much time on my hands! I read most of the reviews and found some people enjoyed the idea of a book about Tod and Devonny and others wanted to hear about Annie and Strat, but I didn't see many requesting all four of them... So that's what I plan to do! PLEASE MAKE A BOOK WITH ALL FOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know about everyone else but I want happy endings and many many many sequels!!!!!! I find it dissappointing when I find a great book and it doesn't have a sequel! anyone know of a never ending story? =o)

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but sequels are never as good as originals..., March 21, 2000
By A Customer
Tod and Devonny are a good couple, and Cooney once again spins her poetic, delightful tales of love and time and fate. "Prisoner" loses out to "Both Sides" and "Out" in many ways, however. I found it too short and brief, and focused too much on a concept different from the Time one explored in Annie and Strat's relationship. Speaking of Annie and Strat, I would have liked to have known the ending of Strat. All in all, a good read, but not great.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book's gross exaggerations give it its charm!, August 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Prisoner of Time (Hardcover)
Caroline Cooney has done it again. This time, she has presented an unbelievably exaggerated portrait of Victorian women and family life. There are some tiny kernels of historical truth here and there, but that's it. Despite what Caroline Cooney says, there certainly were women journalists in the 1890's! (Thus making the line: "Why a woman in New York was writing articles for a newspaper just as if she was a man!" completely inappropriate for the time period)And it was not rude to refer to having female children. I know this because it was mentioned in Edith Wharton's "The Age of Innocence" without anyone gasping in shock. (And Edith Wharton was really there in Victorian times. I truly doubt Ms. Cooney was) I could write forever listing all the inaccuracies in this book! But as terrible as they are, they also make the book terribly compelling! No wonder it's so popular!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Boring Disappointment, July 23, 2011
I had read the first two books in this series and was excited when I saw that Devonny and Tod would meet (from reading the back cover). Unfortunately, Annie was away on an exchange program and Strat had changed his name and headed to Egypt without contacting Devonny.

Devonny came to the modern era after Tod rescued her from an unromantic marriage to a stuffy English lord who only wants her money. She's pretending to be an English exchange student who needs to stay with Tod's family for a little after problems with her host family while the two ask Annie about Strat, who could stop the marriage. That, as I already said, is impossible because Annie doesn't know where Strat is. So the two must work together to figure out why Devonny's father arranged the marriage so quickly and stop him from being a typical overbearing Victorian Era father. Of course there's a bit of a crush between Dev and Tod, but nothing quite like Strat and Annie's relationship. Devonny does find a happy ending that is much more enjoyable than Strat and Annie's separation of a hundred years.

Major character disappointment aside, as I tried to remember what happened in the book to write the review (about a week or so later), I forgot what happened after Devonny staying with Tod and thought that very little therefore happened. Opening the book up to random pages at the end of the book and reading little snippets did help.

Devonny is supposed to be a little more outgoing than the average Victorian woman, but it always seems to me that only in the second half of Prisoner does she not look for somebody else to help her and finally take a stand for herself. In the second book, she relied on Annie to come and save Strat. Here, she wants Strat to save her from the wedding. Tod is actually the one to do so.

The main thing that I get from Tod's personality is that he doesn't like responsibility. He was coerced into being the coach for a girl's soccer team. He doesn't want to believe that he's in 1898, and thinks that it's some sort of dream from drinking strange water. He's not very understanding of Devonny and her situation at first, either, and wasn't very accomodationg.

Props for the Flossie-Gianni elopement subplot.

I didn't enjoy the ending very much. First, the whole avoiding-the-marriage idea didn't fully stand up to murder or breaking out of an insane asylum, and problems with engagement already occured in Both Sides of Time. The ending confrontation wasn't as intense as in the other books. Devonny's love interest (if you can call it that) at the end was somewhat typical and very annoying. I hate to give anything away, but she changed her mind in a complete other direction than what she thought. The women's rights/standing up for themselves was a major idea, and bound to be more than touched upon (as it has in the past two books), but it was almost expected.
