A Fantasy Novel without the troupes,
By Mark Adler (LBC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Prisoner's Welcome (Paperback)
A Prisoner's Welcome is a rare fantasy that lacks the troupes of almost every fantasy novel out there. It starts out with young Lancalion searching for a person to read some parchments that are supposed to detail the murder of his parents-an orphan with power trying to discover the one responsible for his parents muder-SAME OLD troupe! That is where it all changes.
Moore takes us on a whirlwind ride with politics. deceit, trickery, and backstabing on a grand scale. You soon discover that young Lance is not the hero of the story, he is in fact the prophetic villian! Moore uses his police background to paint the thoughts of villians so accuratly you begin to relate with them! I found myself pitying the monster that was directly responsible for the murder of thousands! At the end of each chapter Moore has included a "reflection" where Lancalion speaks about that particular portion of the story and what his thoughts were at the time he experienced them. This action packed Fantasy was loaded with symbolism and deep rooted societal issues that reminded me of a cross between Phil Dick and Robert Jordan. Much like Jordan, there was a little too much "fluff" at times, but it is clear Moore is well on his way to a great career as a writer!

Great "Can't Stop Reading" Book,
By Kimberly Heyen (Edwardsville, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Prisoner's Welcome (Paperback)
I started reading this book a week ago today! And I completed it yesterday and that includes having a full time job and taking care of 3 kids!! I could not put it down! It is a wonderfully written book! I liked how Shane gave each character's point of view on the situations! I cannot wait until the second book!
I agree with a previous review. It would make a GREAT movie!!!

More from Moore PLEASE!!!!,

This review is from: A Prisoner's Welcome (Paperback)
I really feel Moore has something great going here, honestly. I felt the story was captivating, the descriptions (in general of all characters, places, weapons, etc) didn't leave me wanting more depth nor seem long-winded (much like Tolkien kind of does)...they were to the point and highly relevant. I really liked how the plot hopped "swiftly" from one point of view to the opposition's perspective...great tool within APW. This makes the readers sure on what they themselves think, then maybe shifts oneself outside the idea and agree with a seemingly opposite point of view. That really helped the story become an obsession to read. Amerix is an awesome Achilles type hero, just a classic, complex, and highly defiant of multiple antagonists. Lots of great action from start to finish, great character building...the God conflict was stellar, almost a conflict in every action-packed chapter.
The journal at the ends of the chapters almost seemed as if they were from a omniscient being after some chapters instead of Lance...unless as i predict they are to end up a starting/building point for the last book (after all the events have happened and are being reflected upon). But i really cannot say a 100% even a 25% negative thing about APW, great job, i hope they see Moore as a up and coming talent, and supply him with the means to leisurely continue and finish this series. Happy reading, E P.S: Favorite character would have to be Jude....I just feel he is like the "people's hero" of the story and is really like the support system that keeps Lance leveled. Sidekicks are always the most nobel i think...they may not have all the prepared attributes as the one they follow/help, but they are there to aid without fear none the less.

This review is from: A Prisoner's Welcome (Paperback)
This is a story tellers tale that moves in and out deftly. If you're looking for a new Fantasy author or just want something new, I recommend Prisoners Welcome 'APW'. Well told and it flows well. There is an occassional bump in the road, but, overall you won't be disappointed. I think that Shane Moore has a lot of great stories locked up and this is just the beginning of a long and wonderful career.

A must read,

This book was good from beginning to end. I especially like the author descriptions of the battle scenes. The spell casting scenes had a different feel, but I enjoyed it none the less.

Absolutely Amazing!,
This review is from: A Prisoner's Welcome (Paperback)
I thought that this book was wonderful. Moore's writing style makes you feel like you are there watching the characters interact for yourself. I was lucky enough to meet Shane Moore at the 2008 ConGlomeration in Kentucky. He is a great guy who seems very enthusiastic about his work.

Great Fantasy Story!!!!,

I am always willing to give a new author a chance. I needed a new book to read and decided to give A Prisoner's Welcome a try. Oh boy! What a great read! It is a fantasy story full of action, with so many interesting characters. He describes the settings well without rambling on and on and on...
Each character is developed well. I loved the way he took us inside the thoughts of each character; thus enabling us to get to know them better and perhaps understand the reason for their actions. I can't wait for book 2!!! The only thing I have to regret about this book was not buying sooner!

A very good read from a new author,

This review is from: A Prisoner's Welcome (Paperback)
I met Shane at Gen Con '07. While I was somewhat interested in buying the book, I was a bit hesitant. However, Shane's description of the storyline piqued my interest; both in his excitement for the book, as well as his likable personality. After reading the book, I am glad that I picked it up! While having several plots going on at the same time, I did not feel overwhelmed with too many characters. As a reader of mostly fantasy novels, I would rank this as one of my new favorites. Too many of the current authors have to work within the boundaries of their respective employers or have to help promote the company's product. Also, Shane's descriptions were very good, without being too flowery or long. A Prisoner's Welcome was a breath of fresh air. Once I was finally able to start reading the book, it was difficult to put down. I am upset that it took this long for me to finally get around to reading the book. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this wonderful new series.
