Editorial Reviews

The Pritzker Prize is architecture's most prestigious honor. In these NewsHour conversations, Pritzker laureates discuss their work and the significance of architecture in our daily lives. The collection features a brief retrospective and a conversation with the first Pritzker winner, Philip Johnson, on his 90th birthday. Other segments include conversations with architects Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Ricardo Legorreta and Jacques Herzog.

This DVD contains 5 interviews with 5 different architects (Philip Johnson, Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Ricardo Legorreta and Jacques Herzog of Herzog & de Meuron).
It is a good look at these 5 architects. The interviewers guide the discussion quite well and get more than the usual bland answers (from bland questions). What comes through especially well is how quite different the 5 personalities of the 5 featured architects are: Philip Johnson comes as a very sophisticated trickster - charming, ironically playing with what he says, mock affection, etc. Frank Gehry radiates quiet satisfaction while reflecting on what he's achieved - on me, he made the impression of somebody who's gone through lots of pulling and fighting with his buildings (and clients) and demonstrates now an impeccably relaxed aura. Renzo Piano - again, to me - made an extremely sympathetic impression, showing a very humane understanding of (his) architecture. Ricardo Legorreta was very "old school", suit and bow-tie, very distinguished gentleman (as I haven't heard much of him before, it was interesting to see some of his work and the man together). Jacques Herzog finally was quite the opposite: distanced, even remote - left a strange feeling to me (as I've seen other documentaries about Herzog & de Meuron, Pierre de Meuron is definitively the more sympathetic of the two) .
If you're interested in architecture and might want to know what people the architects are, this is a good DVD. I was pleasantly surprised that the producers/interviewers were knowledgeable about their guests (and their work) - the brief retrospectives are solidly done and informative to the point.
4 stars because short interviews are only good to a point... so let's say 4 solid stars.
To anybody interested in architecture and knowing at least some of the work of some of the architects shown here, I can only recommend in getting this DVD.
