Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

In this solo piano recital, Brubeck, 83, looks back on his experiences as a young army private in the closing year of the Second World War. It's a journey marked by songs as significant for their titles and unsung lyrics as their melodies. Classics like "Where or When" appear alongside playful period novelties like "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" and "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie," with Brubeck finding unexpected depths in these lightweight themes, touching on the experiences that shaped his generation. His version of "Last Time I Saw Paris" conveys all the complexity and ambiguity of wartime, and he also plays early original compositions--"We Crossed the Rhine" and "Weep No More"--shaped by the same experience. [The limited edition includes an enlightening second CD of Brubeck reminiscing with Walter Cronkite about leading a band at the front.] --Stuart Broomer

Even at 83, Brubeck shows that he is still a giant of the piano.
In remembering his days in the army during WWII he has chosen
some of the greatest songs of the era and has performed them
masterfully, in a way that only he could. Being one of his generation, I just listened with nostalgia and in awe.
For a jazz fan or a piano solo afficinado (or both) it doesn't
get any better than this. And don't pass up the 2nd CD in the
album - the reminisisces of he and Walter Cronkite make an excellent compliment to the music.

The "interview disc" existed only on a limited run of this set; what Amazon is shipping now does not include the interview disc.

The music speaks for itself.

This CD is great since it is "solo piano" by Dave Brubeck. You will love it. However, it is advertised as a two cd set, the second being a series of interviews on Dave Brubeck's life. This is no longer included, at least from what I can tell there is only room for the music cd. The product details need to be changed.

Terrific album....one disc contains commentary about Brubeck's military experience; very touching documentary. The other disc is rarely heard solo museum, beautifully recorded. This is a must have for anyone who likes Dave Brubeck and his music.

With out Paul Desmond and Joe Morillo, This is heaven.
Buy it, and listen to it when you have the time to listen and enjoy. It is a beautiful thing. Not meant for background though it could, but what a shame

You can almost imagine sitting in a comfortable booth, with a good drink, listening to the best piano bar entertainer in history. These are classics and so are the interpretations; jazz was once described by a musician as "finding another way home" and since listeners know all the melodies, the side trips are even more interesting with Dave leading the way.
