Biography

Townes Van Zandt lived the songs he sang. Sadly, that meant he couldn't live long. The hard-living Texas songsmith was 52 when he died on New Year's Day, 1997. Though he failed to make an impact on the charts during his lifetime, he was greatly respected among the country and folk singers around him and his works have been re-recorded by many notable artists including Nanci Griffith and Lyle… Read more in Amazon's Townes Van Zandt Store

Editorial Reviews

Recorded in 1988 in a private hotel room in Houston, Texas at 3 a.m., this very personal performance finds Townes Van Zandt baring his musical soul in a groove that was seldom heard from him. You can actually feel him contemplating each word and note he played.

This collection is a close-to-the-bone performance of some of his most heartfelt songs, including the classic "Pancho and Lefty," as well as seldom heard songs such as "Nothin’" (which was inspired by the book The Last Temptation of Christ) and "No Place to Fall."

The two bonus tracks are the Lightin’ Hopkins-influenced "Brand New Companion," and "The Hole" (a very dark and scary song, both lyrically and musically).

The international press considers Townes van Zandt to be one of the greatest singer/songwriter/poets in the world, and justifiably so. Townes silenced audiences in coffee houses to concert halls worldwide with his words and music.
