Won't satisfy your appetite,
This review is from: A Private Hunger (Paperback)
I bought the book based on the reviews, and this is a book that obviously will attract and satisfy certain readers. The theme and characters offer interesting potential, but the book never lives up to it. The plot is basically set up to flow from one sex scene to another, and these are not particularly hot or steamy (despite Drakon's heat). The characters are likeable, but one dimensional and never well developed. The dialogue is not particularly convincing or meaningful, and almost monosyllabic at times. Further, it's less of a love story than a story about someone who wants to dominate another, and one who is willing to be submissive--even when thinking his lover is a serial killer. Further, a book about the sexual relationship between an old man (no matter how handsome and young looking) and a young boy/young man (just out of high school) probably appeals to only a certain segment of readers. One of the worst things about this book is that it (or, rather, its author) treats the reader as someone who will not notice inconsistencies, will not be bothered by loose ends, and does not know the difference between suspending reality and a writer who simply has made no effort to create and maintain a believable or credible "alternate" reality.

Very Good,

This review is from: A Private Hunger (Paperback)
I agree with R Parklane - this is an original tale, and not the typical "shapeshifter" story. I liked the fact the Drakon is not a man who can change to a dragon. He is a dragon who also has a human form. He is primal and raw. He hunts, kills, mates. He's ancient and powerful. This contrasts brilliantly with the very modern Sean, who doesn't really understand what is happening until too late.
The butler is fabulous! He reminds me of Alfred from Batman. This book is well written and does include the trademark Sean Michael hot, HOT sex. I found the story was lacking somewhat in the "romance" department (hence 4 instead of 5 stars), but Drakon is not human so that is understandable. Highly recommended.

Cute young guy falls for his rescuers animal magnetism,
By
This review is from: A Private Hunger (Paperback)
Matthew, nineteen years old, is working away from home as a waiter in Seattle before starting his university education, when a handsome young man named Drakon makes him an attractive offer which he however declines. Yet by a strange set of circumstances Matthew soon finds himself in the arms of Drakon his rescuer and admirer, and sharing his grand country home where Drakon seduces him, a seduction to which he willingly submits; the two soon fall passionately in love. Faced with the prospect of a life of luxury with Drakon, cared for by his faithful impeccable, resourceful and sympathetic butler Wetthers, what more could Matthew want? But not is all as it may seem, there is something very strange about Drakon, is there something more to his animal charm; and as Mathew comes to learn some of the disturbing facts, for one he is much, much older than he seems, he begins to question his position. Is his love and need of Drakon enough to overcome the doubts; and while there is no doubt about Drakon's need for Matthew, is Mathew safe in his hands? Can Matthew cope too with the isolation of life in the country house with only Wetthers for friendly comfort and support?
This is a very touching love story with an air of mystery and suspense; for as we gradually learn the truth about Drakon we are never sure how long Matthew will survive. The majority of the tale is taken up with the erotic action between Mathew and Drakon, and it is quite hot and often tender. Matthew, a lithe and slender lad with long curly red hair, comes across as a cute an appealing guy, and the physically strong Drakon is very masculine and handsome, and devoted to Matthew whom he likes to call Pet. But perhaps it would have been good to have seen bit more explanation and plot and little less love action.

Poorly Written Drivel,
This review is from: A Private Hunger (Paperback)
It was one regurgitated sex scene after another. The author has these moments where Matt might grow a backbone, moments where he wants his freedom and choice, and Drakon has sex with him and it's all forgotten. He's in love, so the dominating, abusive guy holding him captive is accepted. There is no plot. I kept expecting there to be something, but nothing ever developed.
The word choices were also horrid. How many times must this author refer to orgasm as 'heat' or arousal as 'need'? It's repetitive and poor. There were several typos that should have been caught in editing. I wouldn't waste money on this book.

Save your money, its simplistic and formula driven. This is the first and last time I'll read or by from this author. For the money paid it's a rip off

This book is really more erotia than romance; sex, sex, and more hot sex fills most of the pages. Although I understood D's need, I felt bad for Matthew; he is strong, but I don't think the isolation is going to be good for his mental stability. It didn't really seem that Drakon understood what Matthew "needed;" what a "human" needs to survive. I even felt that D chose to ignore those needs. It's a very primal story; the heat between these two was very real, but so was the despair of the situation.

If you take out the sex, which is the same, over and over and over again, you will be left with the title and the end. I like a good sex scene as much as anyone, but this was just boring and that is all there was to this book. If I could ask for my money back, I would.

Sure this wasn't just a fanfic?,
By Inoshi (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Private Hunger (Paperback)
"A Private Hunger" is about a waiter named Matthew who meets the mysterious Drakon. Matt is drawn to Drakon and is offered a job, which he immediately declines. However, after a run in with some trouble, Matt is saved by Drakon and is persuaded to stay with the man. Yet not all is at it seems as Matt soon discovers the more involved he becomes with Drakon the more he becomes isolated from all he has ever known.
This book seemed to have a good premises. Based on other reviews, I thought it would be a fun little read, but as I quickly began to read - I soon realized you'd have to be in a certain mood to probably enjoy the book. To be honest, the book read a lot like a fanfic (as in a PWP "plot-what-plot") then an actual short novel. The writing-style and characters are pretty basic, so for some who fancy character development - there really is none. This story had potential, but the plot never really seems to go anywhere. There are no twists or turns, issues that Matt faces are quickly resolved in a matter of one or two pages, or they really aren't addressed as they should be and quickly become forgotten. However, if you are reading for pure smut then sex scenes run like every two to three pages or so. Personally if you really want steamy and well laid-out scenes with dragon shape shifters, "The Draegan Lords" by M.L. Rhodes has a stronger plot, character development and M/M scenes that puts this book to shame. I'd recommend this book if you want something simple and aren't really expecting too much. It is what it is.

I bought this title based on the reviews and the fact I like Sean Michaels. This book was a disappointment for me. I loved the butler though. The story had no real plot. I like reading sex as much as the next person but there needs to be a plot somewhere too. The ending was non existent. It just kind of cuts off. There was no resolution about Matthew or Drakon even. We don't even know if Matt even went to college outside of the house really and that was one of the major fights in the book. We also never find out why certain people are marked with his birthmark and why its not passed from generation to generation. It would've been nice to know if there was some way of making one permanent since Drakon felt more for Matt than anyone of his previous pets as he so put it. There were too many unanswered questions for me to have enjoyed this novel. I finished this book with more questions than answers.

Original and hot paranormal gay romance! Wonderful!,

This review is from: A Private Hunger (Paperback)
This marvellous paranormal fantasy romance between an alpha dragon and his submissive human lover from Sean is very original, hot and sexy. Drakon is not your usual dragon lord. Blessed or cursed with longetivity this dragon searches, finds and loses his human mate through the centuries. Whether he is a shapeshifter or an alien, he is a possessive alpha male to his human lover. But when he feeds at night, well, he is the very savage and cruel dragon the humans dread. Some readers may find Drakon's hunting uncomfortable but I just appreciate Sean's originality in this. Mat is the young human lover marked as Drakon's mate in-line. Their love is one rocky ride as Mat learns to accept his lover's savage nature and loves Drakon for who he is. As I have a thing for dominant alpha alien possessing his human submissive lover "A Private Hunger" definitely rocks. And you just have to love the dragon's faithful butler, Wetthers.
