5.0 out of 5 stars Private Photos of People in Private Places, Made Public, April 22, 1999
This review is from: Private Moments in Public Places (Paperback)
"Private Moments in Public Places", a photo essay of men and women using public restrooms in New York City, demystifies as much as it does create mystery.

The black and white photographs, by Stephanie Saia, expose people in a unique state of vulnerability: making that ever-pressing stop in a public restroom. As the camera transforms the private into public, exposing a hidden, but common experience, a new mystery involving the creation of this essay reveals itself. And this is what makes the book so intriguing: just how did the photographer manage to get these shots? The subjects were apparently unaware. That is, for me, its main appeal. Was the photographer ever caught? Did she get nervous when she took photos in Men's Rooms? How did she manage to take such excellent pictures under such conditions? And just whose feet is that you see under the stall door on page 23? The sparse text by Phyllis Prinz subtly illustrates that a picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words.

It's a great coffee table book, a great bathroom book, and I am proud to feature samples from this work of art in The Toilet Museum [online]...
