Review

I really enjoyed this book....I didn't want it to end! -- Rodd Steale, Under The Covers, Impact, September 1997, New Orleans, LA

From the Publisher

Private Nation is a provocative new novel by N. A. Diaman which questions American values in the coming millennium.

Walled enclaves for the wealthy, private prisons for the poor, and shopping malls for the rest of the population, are the predominate institutions of the mid-twenty century society portrayed. The consequences of individual and corporate greed, racism, homophobia, right-wing extremism are evident throughout, as privatization is taken to its extreme.

Private Nation follows the sexual and spiritual adventures of two young men of different races and classes who meet and form a life-long bond.

Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the novel is an upbeat, quick-paced, romantic odyssey through a post-modern wasteland. An affirmation of humanistic values and the potential for a more holistic approach to life.

San Francisco novelist N. A. Diaman, author of Ed Dean Is Queer, The Fourth Wall, Second Crossing, Reunion, and Castro Street Memories, utilizes a future fantasy setting to reflect on troubling contemporary issues. While critical of present economic trends, he again offers a visionary alternative.

3.0 out of 5 stars Searching for meaning, November 6, 2007
This review is from: Private Nation Pb (Paperback)

Set in the future when the United States has fallen into a privatised consumer driven free for all, and has sold off its assets and even some of its States; two young guys set off in search of real life. Benz (his sister is called Mercedes) and Bud Lite come from different social backgrounds, and different races, but the minute the cast eyes on one another they are smitten. Each is escaping his own soulless life style, and the two go off together in search of something better. They find in it each other, and in various ones they meet on their travels. They spend several years in a commune where they happily and unselfishly share everything, including themselves with the other commune members.
Eventually they end up, happy and contented, and still deeply in love, in a sun drenched part of the US that now comes under Mexico.
While this is a damning commentary on the American way of life, it is far from heavy. The story progresses easily and at a leisurely rapid pace; to put it another way, there are no lengthy descriptions or explanations, no justifications, neither are there contrived problems or obstacles to overcome. The two boys find their dream.
It makes for an unusual but interesting, thought provoking and uplifting read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gay Love, September 29, 2007
This review is from: Private Nation Pb (Paperback)
From the moment Bud Lite and Benz laid eyes on each other, sexual attraction arced between the two men. Benz decided to hop on the back of Bud's motorcycle and travel to a place where they felt they could belong and be together.

On their trip of self discovery they meet many people and share their bodies with other men along the way. Neither man was jealous as they knew who belonged to whom, they just relished in the enjoyment fulfilled by the sexual release.

Benz had to leave his sister to be with Bud, and Bud was an orphan so when he finally met his birth father at age 38 he felt complete. Benz was also reunited with his sister, Mercedes and all seemed right with the world. Although Benz had changed his name to Altair and Bud was now known as Hadar, they were both still very much in love, and that love grew more and more every day.

Mr. Diaman pens a novel about sexual discovery as well as self discovery through the eyes of two young men looking for more in the world. This novel was one big orgy in a way, because the two main characters remained faithful to one another but also shared their bodies with other men. The conversations again did not have quotation marks so it was hard to follow, but the story line was enjoyable. 3.5 Hearts
